The macroevolutionary dynamics of mammalian sexual size dimorphism. [PDF]

open access: yesProc Biol Sci, 2023
Abstract Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is a common phenomenon across the animal kingdom. Mammals are unusual in primarily displaying male-biased SSD, where males of a species are typically larger than females. The driving factors behind the evolution of this SSD have been much debated, with popular hypotheses including the influence of ...

Sexual size dimorphism in anurans [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 2002
Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the direction and extent of sexual size dimorphism in anurans (in which males are usually smaller than females) as a result of sexual selection. Here, we present an analysis to test the hypothesis that sexual dimorphism in anurans is largely a function of differences between the sexes in life-history ...

Sexual Size Dimorphism and Egg-Size Allometry in Birds [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution, 1994
We tested the hypothesis that egg size should evolve in sexually dimorphic birds to reduce costs associated with more rapid growth by nestlings of the larger sex. Consistent with this hypothesis, we found that in species in which males were larger, females laid proportionately larger eggs as sexual size dimorphism increased.

SEXUAL SIZE DIMORPHISM IN STONE MARTEN (MARTES FOINA, ERXL. 1777) FROM SARNENA SREDNA GORA MTS (BULGARIA) [PDF]

open access: yesTrakia Journal of Sciences, 2019
Sexual dimorphism in body size measurements of 65 stone martens was investigated in winter periods (10.12.- 01.03) 2013 to 2017. There was found sexual dimorphism in body size of Stone Marten from Central Bulgaria: males were larger than females.

Variation in craniomandibular morphology and sexual dimorphism in pantherines and the sabercat Smilodon fatalis. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Sexual dimorphism is widespread among carnivorans, and has been an important evolutionary factor in social ecology. However, its presence in sabertoothed felids remains contentious.

The origins and drivers of sexual size dimorphism in sharks. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
AbstractWhile sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is abundant in nature, there is huge variation in both the intensity and direction of SSD. SSD results from a combination of sexual selection for large male size, fecundity selection for large female size and ecological selection for either.

Sexual dimorphism and ancestral variation in the pectoral and pelvic girdles of modern humans

open access: yesHomo, 2023
Discussions of the evolution of sexual dimorphism in torso shape and the pectoral region assume that this dimorphism exists independently of body size.

Sexual dimorphism in Trapelus lessonae (De Filippi, 1865) (Sauria: Agamidae) from western Iranian Plateau [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Animal Biosystematics, 2013
We collected 60 adult males and 85 adult females of Trapelus lessonae De Filippi, 1863 in early May 2008 from central Iranian plateau to study sexual dimorphism in morphological traits as well as female reproductive traits. Size-related sexual dimorphism

Stat5b Regulates Sexually Dimorphic Gene Expression in Zebrafish Liver

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
Sexual size dimorphism is an interesting phenomenon occurred in many fish species. Wildtype zebrafish exhibits a significant sexual dimorphism in body size at the adult stage.

Correlation between investment in sexual traits and valve sexual dimorphism in Cyprideis species (Ostracoda). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Assessing the long-term macroevolutionary consequences of sexual selection has been hampered by the difficulty of studying this process in the fossil record.
