Simulations of the Recovery Process of an Air-Coil SFCL
IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2016In this paper, a study of the recovery process of an air-coil superconducting fault current limiter (AC-SFCL) is done. Tests of an AC-SFCL prototype operating at normal conditions subjected to fault currents have been performed. After the interruption of the fault current, the system recovers its normal conditions in such a way that the recovery ...

Electromagnetic design of saturated iron core SFCL
2011 International Conference on Applied Superconductivity and Electromagnetic Devices, 2011The most attractive advantage of a saturated iron core SFCLs (SIC-SFCL) is that its impedance can change from very low in normal power transmission to very high for fault current limiting. This characteristic is achieved by varying the electromagnetic states in the main body of the device, including the iron cores, the ac working coils, and the dc bias

2D and 3D Numerical Models of Inductive SFCL
IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2007The Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) can be used to limit the short-circuit current level in electrical networks. The inductive SFCL works like a transformer with shorted secondary HTS winding. Because of the iron core, the inductive SFCL is not axially symmetrical and should be modeled in 3D geometry.

Design and Characterization of the Integrated Matrix-Type SFCL
IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2009In this paper, we report the improved and integrated matrix-type superconducting fault current limiter (MFCL). The new MFCL proposed in this work has a structure that easily improves the quench characteristics of superconducting elements. This integrated MFCL is simply constructed by mounting a trigger element and superconducting elements in a single ...

Characterization of reactors for integrated matrix-type SFCL
Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications, 2011Abstract We reported the fabrication and analysis of the reactor for matrix-type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs). Reactors take a role of inducting magnetic field to superconductors in reactors and bypassing partial fault currents to themselves. Superconductors used in this work were YBCO thin films deposited on 5.08 cm diameter Al 2 O

Effect of a SFCL on Commutation Failure in a HVDC System
IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2013This paper describes an analysis of the effects of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) on commutation failure in a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system. Most commutation failures are caused by voltage disturbances at the inverter side and cannot be avoided in HVDC systems using thyristors.

Earlier works have reported the emerging fault current limiter (FCL) segmentation technique to mitigate concurrent commutation failure (CF) under ac faults in multi-infeed LCC-HVDC systems. However, the FCL's parameter is determined by the electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation based method, which will lead to enormous workload and long computation

Application Effects of SFCL in Korean Power System
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2003Abstract As power systems grow more complex and power demands increase, the fault current tends to gradually increase. In the near future, the fault current will exceed a circuit breaker rating for some substations, which is an especially important issue in the Seoul.

Analysis on the Fusion Technology of a Commercial Transformer and an SFCL
Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism, 2012In this study, a new concept is proposed on a combination device with functions of a commercial transformer and a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). This device serves as a transformer by stepping the voltage up or down in normal condition.

Temperature Dependent Equivalent Circuit of a Magnetic-Shield Type SFCL
IEEE Transactions on Appiled Superconductivity, 2005In order to investigate the reciprocal interaction between a SFCL and the Power System an equivalent circuit of the device needs to be introduced in a power system simulator. In this paper the equivalent circuit of a magnetic shield type SFCL, consisting of two coupled electric and thermal networks, is obtained starting from the integral formulation of
