Why does low intensity, long-day lighting promote growth in Petunia, Impatiens, and tomato? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Numerous reports demonstrate that low intensity, long-day (LD) lighting treatments can promote growth. However, there are conflicting suggestions as to the mechanisms involved.

A Workflow to Accelerate Microstructure‐Sensitive Fatigue Life Predictions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a workflow to accelerate predictions of microstructure‐sensitive fatigue life. Results from frameworks with varying levels of simplification are benchmarked against published reference results. The analysis reveals a trade‐off between accuracy and model complexity, offering researchers a practical guide for selecting the optimal ...

Some Physiological Studies on Ornamental Ipomora Batatas as a Groundcover Species [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The morphological development and some physiological aspects were studied on two cultivars of sweet potato which are normally used as an ornamental plant. Among the studies under taken were those on the botanical characteristics of the plants, effects

Oxide‐Free Titanium Coatings by Wire Arc Spraying in a Silane‐Doped Inert Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A silane‐doped argon atmosphere enables the production of oxide‐free titanium coatings via twin‐wire arc spraying at ambient pressure. This innovative approach eliminates residual oxygen, creating process conditions that prevent oxidation and nitride formation.

Effects of shade on growth, production and quality of coffee (Coffea arabica) in Ethiopia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The research work was conducted to evaluate the effect of shade on growth and production of coffee plants. To achieve this, growth and productivity of coffee plants growing under shade trees were compared with those of coffee plants growing under direct ...

Surface Tension Measurement of Ti‐6Al‐4V by Falling Droplet Method in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, the temperature‐dependent surface tension of free falling, oscillating Ti‐6Al‐4V droplets is investigated in both argon and monosilane doped, oxygen‐free atmosphere. Droplet temperature and oscillation are captured with one single high‐speed camera, and the surface tension is calculated with Rayleigh's formula.

Mechanisms of pathogenic transmission in agroforests: the role of leaf functional traits in shade coffee systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Coffee leaf rust (CLR), a pathogenic disease that results in premature leaf fall and significant yield loss, has become a major concern in coffee-growing regions, especially in Central and South America, after recent intense epidemics.

Understanding the Stochastic Nature of Process Parameter Development of Blown Powder Laser Beam Directed Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing of Pure Molybdenum

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Identified through the use of statistical design of experiments and metallographic investigation, this study exposes the stochastic origins of intergranular cracks in blown powder laser beam directed energy deposition additive manufacturing of pure molybdenum. It further demonstrates a successful crack mitigation approach with direct correlation to the

Robust Spot Melting by 3D Spot Arrangements in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes an approach to replace separately melted contours for spot melting in electron beam powder fusion. Adapting the spot arrangements close to the contour combined with stacking yields a comparable surface quality without the inherent challenges of separate contours, as demonstrated, by electron optical images and roughness measurements.
