On the Origins of Toughness in Corymbia calophylla (Marri Tree) Nuts

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover the natural toughening mechanisms of the marri nut, including fiber pullout, crack deflection, and a viscoelastic matrix, which enable exceptional energy absorption and ductility comparable to Teflon, with an elastic modulus similar to acrylic.

Spatial organization of individuals and ecosystems services in tropical agroecosystems : COS 18-9 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background/Question/Methods Agroecology involves the optimization of ecological processes in agroecosystems. It has been identified as a sustainable alternative to the negative environmental impact of modern agriculture.

The use of ecosystem-based adaptation practices by smallholder farmers in Central America [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
There is growing interest in promoting the use of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) practices to help smallholder farmers adapt to climate change, however there is limited information on how commonly these practices are used by smallholder farmers and ...

Alternating High‐Fat and Polysaccharide Diets Modulates Gut Phage‐Bacterial Interplay

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study reveals how alternating high‐fat and polysaccharide diets reshape the human gut virome and enhance phage‐bacteria interactions. Using large‐scale metagenomic meta‐analysis and a time‐resolved mouse model, the authors show that diets strongly modulate phage abundance, lifestyle, and gene exchange, offering new insights into nutrition‐guided ...

Maternal Preconception Antibiotic Exposure Disrupts Microbial Succession: A Transgenerational Risk for Offspring Gut Mucosal Immaturity and Colitis Susceptibility

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study reveals that maternal antibiotic exposure prior to conception disrupts intergenerational gut microbial succession. By enhancing maternal‐offspring microbial transmission, altering microbial developmental trajectories and increasing selective pressures during community assembly, these disturbances lead to persistent gut mucosal immaturity and

Shade trees improve coffee health without reducing (too much) coffee potential yield [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Shade trees are increasingly recognized to benefit to biological regulation in tropical agroforestry systems (AFS). However, studies have revealed contradictory results for cryptogrammic diseases, suggesting strong interactions with local abiotic ...

Understanding preferences for tree attributes: the relative effects of socio-economic and local environmental factors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Urban plant biodiversity is influenced by both the physical environment and attitudes and preferences of urban residents for specific plant types. Urban residents are assumed to be disconnected from their immediate environment, and cultural and societal ...

Diversity Patterns of Domestic Herbivore Viruses in China Reveal Transmission Dynamics with Disease Management Implications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study performs pan‐viromic profiling of 14,529 samples from 5,710 domestic herbivores across five Chinese provinces, establishing the DhCN‐Virome (1,085,360 viral metagenomes). It reveals species/sample‐specific viromic signatures and cross‐species transmission dynamics, aiding unified disease control.

A miR156-SPL module controls shade-induced inhibition of vascular cambium activity through cytokinin pathway in poplar

open access: yesCell Reports
Summary: In natural forests and plantations, trees often encounter neighbor proximity that hinders wood production. However, the mechanisms by which shade regulates cambial activity during secondary growth remain elusive.
