On the removal of shadows from images [PDF]
This paper is concerned with the derivation of a progression of shadow-free image representations. First, we show that adopting certain assumptions about lights and cameras leads to a 1D, gray-scale image representation which is illuminant invariant at each image pixel. We show that as a consequence, images represented in this form are shadow-free.

Shadow Removal in Indoor Scenes [PDF]
In this paper, we propose a shadow removal algorithm for indoor scenes. This algorithm uses three types of constraints: chromaticity consistency, texture consistency and range of shadow intensity. The chromaticity consistency is verified in both HSV and RGB color spaces.

In this paper we demonstrate how to recover surface shape from single images of faces using shape-from-shading when shadows are present. We make use of a statistical representation of the distribution of surface normal directions based on the equidistant azimuthal projection.
