Removing shadows

Pattern Recognition Letters, 2005
Shadows often confound algorithms designed to solve computer vision tasks such as image segmentation, object detection and tracking. In this paper, a shadow detection and removal technique is proposed. The method requires no camera calibration or other a priori information regarding the scene.

Depth‐Aware Shadow Removal

Computer Graphics Forum, 2022
AbstractShadow removal from a single image is an ill‐posed problem because shadow generation is affected by the complex interactions of geometry, albedo, and illumination. Most recent deep learning‐based methods try to directly estimate the mapping between the non‐shadow and shadow image pairs to predict the shadow‐free image.

Shadow Removal Based on Shadow Direction and Shadow Attributes

2006 International Conference on Computational Inteligence for Modelling Control and Automation and International Conference on Intelligent Agents Web Technologies and International Commerce (CIMCA'06), 2006
Moving shadow removal is critical for robust moving object tracking system. A shadow removal algorithm based on shadow attributes is presented in this paper. The direction of shadow is estimated first, and then shadow points are sampled based on the direction of shadow. At last the shadow attributes is calculated using the sampled shadow points.

Paired Regions for Shadow Detection and Removal

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2013
In this paper, we address the problem of shadow detection and removal from single images of natural scenes. Differently from traditional methods that explore pixel or edge information, we employ a region-based approach. In addition to considering individual regions separately, we predict relative illumination conditions between segmented regions from ...

Quaternion-based image shadow removal

The Visual Computer, 2021
Visual effects such as shadows and highlights appear in photographs due to variations in lighting conditions. Although these effects add more meaning to the images, they pose various problems to specific computer vision algorithms. Hence, the removal of shadows and highlights is often considered as a prerequisite to such algorithms. This paper presents

Shadow Patching: Guided Image Completion for Shadow Removal

2019 IEEE Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision (WACV), 2019
Removing unwanted shadows is a common need in photo editing software. Previous methods handle some shadows well but perform poorly in cases with severe degradation (darker shadowing) because they rely on directly restoring the degraded data in the shadowed region.

Adaptive shadow estimator for removing shadow of moving object

Computer Vision and Image Understanding, 2010
We propose an adaptive shadow estimator to detect and eliminate the shadow of a moving object while adapting to variation of illumination and the environment in an automatic manner. The proposed method discriminates between the shadow and the moving object by cascading three estimators which use the properties of chromaticity, brightness, and local ...

Shadow Detection and Removal Using GAN

2020 28th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO), 2021
To remove shadowed region in a single image, it is important to obtain high accuracy in both two processes, shadow detection and removal. In order to improve the results, recent methods perform these two processes simultaneously and use GAN for the training.

Shadow detection and removal using a shadow formation model

2016 IEEE First International Conference on Data Stream Mining & Processing (DSMP), 2016
This work is devoted to shadow detection and removal from very high resolution (VHR) satellite images. As an example, a WorldView-2 satellite image of an urban area was processed. The presence of shadows can cause a loss of a significant part of useful information.
