Effect of shaft on resistance of a ball penetrometer

open access: yesGéotechnique, 2011
The influence of the shaft on the resistance of a ball penetrometer was examined using a large deformation finite-element approach. A range of ball–shaft diameter ratios between infinitely large (no shaft) to 1 were examined in terms of resistance during monotonic penetration and extraction. It was found that the steady-state resistance decreased with

Crack Resistance of a Shaft in Flexure with Rotation

Russian Engineering Research, 2019
For more reliable prediction of the life of structural elements, an energy criterion of crack resistance corresponding to nonlinear failure mechanics is proposed: the critical effective shape energy. On the basis of fatigue tests of 15 model shaft elements in flexure with rotation, the crack resistance of the shaft is assessed as a function of the ...

Field investigation of the effect of installation method on the shaft resistance of piles in clay [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Geotechnical Journal, 2010
This paper presents the results of a series of field experiments performed to study the effect of installation method on the shaft resistance developed by a pile installed in soft clayey silt.

Shaft resistance of piles in clay

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1990
A new method is proposed for elucidating, formulating, and predicting the axial capacity of friction piles in moderately overconsolidated clays (1≤OCR≤4) within a systematic and rational framework. The paper focuses on single, vertical, rigid, and cylindrical piles driven in deep deposits which exhibit normalized behavior.

Resistance of degraded hair shafts to contaminant DNA

Forensic Science International, 2006
We have investigated the susceptibility of degraded human hair shaft samples to contamination by exogenous sources of DNA, including blood, saliva, skin cells, and purified DNA. The results indicate that on the whole hair shafts are either largely resistant to penetration by contaminant DNA, or extremely easy to successfully decontaminate.

Shaft resistance of a pile embedded in rock

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, 2004
Abstract A rational calculation procedure is proposed for establishing the shaft resistance of a pile embedded in rock, based upon the Hoek and Brown failure model. The state of the art of the calculation of the pile shaft resistance is analysed.

Fatigue resistance of nitrided and straightened shafts

Metal Science and Heat Treatment, 1963
1. Straightening of nitrided shafts at 500–520°C for 10–14 h decreases the fatigue limit (24–34%, according to the data obtained with our models). 2. Tempering of nitrided shafts under the same conditions used for straightening decreases the fatigue limit 8%. 3.

Shaft Resistance of Model Pile in Clay

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1988
A test apparatus to measure the load transfer along the shaft of a model pile inserted in a specimen of clay is described. This apparatus allows independent control of the boundary stresses of a cylindrical clay specimen in the vertical and horizontal directions.

A new method for predicting the ultimate shaft resistance of rock-socketed drilled shafts

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Geotechnical Engineering, 2019
Data from 187 loading tests on rock-socketed shafts are used to develop a new relationship between the ultimate shaft resistance fsu and unconfined compressive strength σc of intact rock. The adhesion factor αq of the shaft resistance for different types of rock and the relationship between αq and the embedment ratio are discussed. Furthermore, because
