An overview of shaft voltages and bearing currents in rotating machines

2016 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2016
Shaft voltages and associated "shaft currents" or "bearing currents" have been known since more than a century on DC and AC motors under classical line operation. More recently with the emergence of inverter drives, there has been an increase of high-frequencies bearing currents and shaft voltages creating mainly premature failure of bearings. Although

Investigation on the shaft voltage generation of large synchronous turboalternators

COMPEL - The international journal for computation and mathematics in electrical and electronic engineering, 2020
Purpose This paper aims to go deeper on the analysis of the shaft voltage of large turbogenerators. The main interest of this study is the investigation process developed. Design/methodology/approach The analysis of the shaft voltage because of several defects is based on a two-dimensional (2D) finite element modeling.

An influence of voltage sag on nonutility generator shaft torque

2000 Power Engineering Society Summer Meeting (Cat. No.00CH37134), 2002
An influence of the voltage sag on the shaft torque of the nonutility generator connecting to the utility system is investigated. During the oscillation of the generator electromagnetic torque, the mechanical shaft torque also oscillates according to the mechanical oscillation modes. In this situation, the shaft might be damaged.

Shaft voltage suppression for inverter-driven induction motor applying SHEPWM

2008 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference, 2008
In order to reduce the common mode (CM) voltage and shaft voltage for induction motor driven by inverter, an Improved Selective Harmonics Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (ISHEPWM) method was proposed in this paper. First ISHEPWM eliminates certain low order components of common mode voltage (CMV) generated by inverter.

Induction motor eccentricity diagnosis using impedance spectrum and shaft voltage

The XIX International Conference on Electrical Machines - ICEM 2010, 2010
The paper is devoted to experimental investigations of the induction motor rotor eccentricity problem by the use of displacement of the rotor centerline in the stator bore. The changes in the impedance spectrum and the shaft voltage have been analyzed.

Monitoring of shaft voltages and grounding currents in rotating machines

2014 17th International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS), 2014
The phenomenon of voltages and currents on motor and generator shafts has been known for the last 100 years [1, 2]. It affects motors, hydro generators and turbo generators. There has been an increase in occurrences and intensity of shaft current damages as machines became larger, particularly on high speed turbo generators.

Motor shaft voltages and bearing currents and their reduction in multilevel medium-voltage PWM voltage-source-inverter drive applications

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2000
This paper presents test results on problems and solutions of motor shaft voltages and bearing currents in medium-voltage pulsewidth modulated (PWM) drive systems. Tests show that multilevel medium-voltage PWM voltage-source inverter drives can cause motor bearing currents, similar to a low-voltage PWM drives, even with one motor bearing insulated ...
