On horizontal convection in very shallow enclosures

open access: yes, 2021
This thesis conducts a numerical investigation of a distinctive mode of natural convection, known as horizontal convection, where heating and cooling happens at the same bottom boundary. This study emphasises the flow characteristics of the very shallow enclosures, which allows elucidating the ocean-relevant confinement on horizontal convection.

Observational Evidence of the Transition from Shallow to Deep Convection in the Western Caribbean Trade Winds

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2019
The present study aims to determine the factors influencing the transition from shallow to deep convection in the trade winds region using an observational approach, with emphasis in the Yucatan Peninsula in eastern Mexico.

Investigating Shallow Convection with Observation and Modeling

open access: yes, 2023
Shallow convection is essential to the climate system. It determines the vertical structure of convective boundary layer and provides a good starting point for deep convection by facilitating the vertical transport of heat, moisture and momentum. The stratocumulus and cumulus clouds from it are ubiquitous and strongly modulate Earth's radiation budget.

Probing the Dynamics of Shallow Cumulus Convection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Our limited knowledge of convection and its poor representation in climate models is one of the factors that most hamper our ability to understand and predict the climate system. In this thesis, the dynamics of shallow cumulus convection are probed using Large-eddy simulations (LES) and simple models.

Physically Constrained Stochastic Shallow Convection in Realistic Kilometer‐Scale Simulations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2018
A new configuration of a parameterization for shallow convection in the Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic Model (ICON) is described and tested on a single realistic test case.

Convective Steady State in Shallow Cloud Fields

Physical Review Letters, 2023
Shallow cloud fields exhibit different patterns, such as closed or open hexagonal cells and cloud streets. These patterns play a key role in determining the cloud fields' radiative effects, thereby affecting the climate. Here, we show that a large subset of shallow cloud fields forms organized, mesoscale-sized, regular patterns that persist for ...
