Shallow cumulus convection plays a crucial role in determining the vertical thermodynamic structure of the atmosphere and influences the large-scale circulation significantly in both tropics and mid-latitudes. This is most clearly demonstrated in the Hadley circulation over the tropical oceans, such as schematically illustrated in Fig. 1.

Free convection in a shallow wavy enclosure
International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer, 2006This paper presents the simulation of free convection heat transfer and fluid flow in a horizontal and shallow wavy enclosure. Its bottom wall is varied with a sinusoidal function while the top wall is flat. The wavy wall has constant hot temperature and ceiling is cold as verticals are insulated.

Shallow Surface Waves in a Convecting Fluid
1991We consider the interaction between surface waves in shallow fluids and convection. We show that the presence of a thermal gradient compensates viscous losses which would otherwise damp the waves. Propagating solitary waves are found with their amplitude determined by the excess of the Rayleigh number above its critical value.

Downdraft effects in a shallow convection adjustment
Studia Geophysica et Geodaetica, 1991The paper deals with the role of penetrative downdrafts in the convective adjustment suggested by Betts[1]. Three different types of downdraft sinking levels are used in the assessment of the reference profiles of temperature and humidity in cumulus cloud layers and these are compared with the profiles with no downdraft.

The mesoscale organization of shallow convection:
2018Using ten years of MODIS observations, patterns of mesoscale organization in trade-wind clouds are assessed and evaluated. By initially examining a subset of observations, four forms of organization are identified: Sugar, wherein clouds appear like fine-grained and unorganized sprinklings of powdered sugar over a background of the dark-ocean; Gravel ...

Onset of convection in shallow cylindrical containers
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2000Summary: This paper considers the onset of convection in shallow cylindrical containers heated from below where the boundary which forms the cross-section of the cylinder is of arbitrary shape. The lateral dimensions of the bonndary are assumed to be much larger than the characteristic wavelength of convection, allowing use of the methods of multiple ...

Mixing Structure in a Shallow Convection Adjustment
Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1993A possible role of downdraft structures in Betts' adjustment for nonprecipitating cumulus clouds is examined. The types that correspond to the different downdraft equilibrium levels are used in the types of mixing-line slopes cumulus layers, assessment of the reference profiles of temperature arid specific humidity inside the computed importance of ...
