Investigation and evaluation methods of shallow geothermal energy considering the influences of fracture water flow

open access: yesGeothermal Energy, 2023
The energy replenishment and heat convection induced by fracture water flowing through the rock mass impact the shallow geothermal energy occurrence, transfer and storage mechanisms in it.

A new drag and lift correlation for spherocylinders from fully resolved Immersed Boundary Method

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Many industrial processes deal with non‐spherical particles, e.g., mineral mining and biomass conversion. It is crucial to understand the particles' hydrodynamics to control and optimize these processes. To extend the current state‐of‐the‐art from arrays of spherical particles to spherocylindrical particles, we performed extensive particle ...

A Computational Approach for Biomimetic Design of Liver‐On‐A‐Chip

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
A biomimetic liver‐on‐a‐chip with antiparallel perfusion was designed using COMSOL‐guided simulation to replicate hepatic acinus transport. Full‐scale modelling revealed diffusion‐dominated, length‐dependent nutrient gradients and low‐shear conditions.

Local impact of stochastic shallow convection on clouds and precipitation in the tropical Atlantic

open access: yes, 2020
The local impact of stochastic shallow convection on clouds and precipitation is tested in a case study over the tropical Atlantic on 20 December 2013 using the Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic Model (ICON).

Interactions between shallow and deep convection under a finite departure from convective quasi–equilibrium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The present paper presents a simple theory for the transformation of non-precipitating, shallow convection into precipitating, deep convective clouds. In order to make the pertinent point a much idealized system is considered, consisting only of shallow ...

The Influence of Parameterized Shallow Convection on Trade‐Wind Clouds and Circulations in the HARMONIE‐AROME Mesoscale Model

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
Mesoscale numerical weather prediction models currently operate at kilometer‐scale and even sub‐kilometer‐scale resolutions. Although shallow cumulus convection is partly resolved at these resolutions, it is still common to use a shallow cumulus ...

Unified Entrainment and Detrainment Closures for Extended Eddy‐Diffusivity Mass‐Flux Schemes

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
We demonstrate that an extended eddy‐diffusivity mass‐flux (EDMF) scheme can be used as a unified parameterization of subgrid‐scale turbulence and convection across a range of dynamical regimes, from dry convective boundary layers, through shallow ...

Mesoscale modeling of lake effect snow over Lake Erie – sensitivity to convection, microphysics and the water temperature [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Science and Research, 2010
Lake effect snow is a shallow convection phenomenon during cold air advection over a relatively warm lake. A severe case of lake effect snow over Lake Erie on 24 December 2001 was studied with the MM5 and WRF mesoscale models.

Pre‐Curved Everting Robots With Embedded Steering Intelligence Fabricated by CO2 Laser Welding

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Design and experimental demonstration of a laser welded growing robot for anatomically guided navigation. The robot follows an aortic arch phantom entering the branchiocephalic branch through steering by design. The figure shows the physical phantom setup, CAD defined weld geometry and full robot eversion.
