Rock mechanical properties under reconstructed deep in situ thermo–hydro–mechanical conditions: Implications for CO₂‐related injection scenarios

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract illustrates a reconstructed in situ thermo‐hydro‐mechanical (THM) framework in which porosity serves as the central variable linking stress, pore pressure, and temperature to evolving mechanical properties of rocks. Under burial conditions, in situ stress, pore pressure, and temperature jointly govern volumetric strain and ...

How Wind Shear Affects Trade‐wind Cumulus Convection

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
Motivated by an observed relationship between marine low cloud cover and surface wind speed, this study investigates how vertical wind shear affects trade‐wind cumulus convection, including shallow cumulus and congestus with tops below the freezing level.

Global Simulation of the Madden–Julian Oscillation With Stochastic Unified Convection Scheme

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2023
A new spectral convection scheme, the stochastic unified convection scheme (stochastic UNICON), is implemented in a general circulation model. The global climate simulation using stochastic UNICON is evaluated and compared with UNICON, focusing on the ...

Hydrothermal Wave in a Shallow Liquid Layer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The oscillatory thermocapillary convection and hydrothermal wave in a shallow liquid layer, where a temperature difference is applied between two parallel sidewalls, have been numerically investigated in a two-dimensional model.

Simulating Shallow Mesoscale Overturning Circulations in the Trades With Kilometer‐Scale Earth System Models

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Shallow mesoscale overturning circulations (SMOCs) are ubiquitous in the trades, primarily triggered by mesoscale convective heating and influencing the organization of shallow cumuli.

A Multiparcel Model for Shallow Cumulus Convection

open access: yesJournal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2002
A new parameterization for cumulus convection is formulated, that consists of an ensemble of small, rising parcels. Large eddy simulation (LES) results are used to parameterize the lateral mixing of such a parcel: for the mixing process a relaxation timescale is defined and its value is determined by investigating individual LES clouds.

Bio‐Inspired Robust Non‐combustible Bioplastic with Superinsulated Energy Harvesting for Intelligent Firefighting

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
This study develops a novel non‐combustible chitosan‐based bioplastic (NCCB) via ethanol‐induced surface assembly. The material's inherent flame retardancy and thermally insulating, rough surface enable high‐performance TENGs. The NCCB‐TENG maintains stable output even when exposed to fire and exhibits dual sensitivity to temperature (25–200°C) and ...

What controls the transition from shallow to deep convection?

open access: yes, 2009
In this study, a 2D cloud-system-resolving model (CSRM) is used to assess the control mechanism for the transition from shallow to deep convection in the diurnal cycle over land.

Estudo numérico da interação entre convecção rasa e radiação com ênfase no ciclo diurno do balanço de energia à superfície na Amazônia A numeric study of the interaction between shallow convection and radiation with emphasis in the diurnal cycle of the surface energy budget in Amazonia

Assessing CLUBB PDF Closure Assumptions for a Continental Shallow‐to‐Deep Convective Transition Case Over Multiple Spatial Scales

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
Assumed‐PDF (probability density function) higher‐order turbulence closures (APHOCs) are now widely used for parameterizing boundary layer turbulence and shallow convection in Earth system models (ESMs). A better understanding of the resolution‐dependent
