The Optimal Shape of a Javelin
The problem of finding the optimal tapering of a free (nonsupported) javelin is described and solved. For the optimal javelin, the lowest mode of vibration has the highest possible frequency. With this tapering inner damping will lead to the cessation of the vibration at the fastest possible rate.

An active contour model for texture image segmentation using Rényi divergence measure
This paper proposes an efficient method for active unsupervised texture segmentation. A new descriptor for texture features extractions based on Gaussian and mean curvature is constructed.

Fireshape: a shape optimization toolbox for Firedrake [PDF]
We introduce Fireshape, an open-source and automated shape optimization toolbox for the finite element software Firedrake. Fireshape is based on the moving mesh method and allows users with minimal shape optimization knowledge to tackle with ease ...

Shape Optimization Problems for Metric Graphs [PDF]
We consider the shape optimization problem $$\min\big\{{\mathcal E}(\Gamma)\ :\ \Gamma\in{\mathcal A},\ {\mathcal H}^1(\Gamma)=l\ \big\},$$ where ${\mathcal H}^1$ is the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure and ${\mathcal A}$ is an admissible class of one ...

On the design of membranes with increasing fundamental frequency
By means of a relaxation approach, we study the shape design of a stiff inclusion with given area in a membrane in order to maximize its fun- damental frequency.

Shape Optimization of a Shell in Comsol Multiphysics
Optimization calculations are currently an actual and in-demand direction of computer-aided design. It allows not only the identification of the future characteristics of an object, but also the implementation of its exact model using a set of various ...

Optimal shapes of compact strings [PDF]
Optimal geometrical arrangements, such as the stacking of atoms, are of relevance in diverse disciplines. A classic problem is the determination of the optimal arrangement of spheres in three dimensions in order to achieve the highest packing fraction; only recently has it been proved that the answer for infinite systems is a face-centred-cubic lattice.

Shape optimization of microlenses
Microlenses are highly attractive for optical applications such as super resolution and photonic nanojets, but their design is more demanding than the one of larger lenses because resonance effects play an important role, which forces one to perform a full wave analysis.
