Crack bifurcation in sharp V-notches

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2020
Abstract In this paper, the crack initiation angle is studied experimentally and theoretically in sharp V-notched specimens subjected to mode I loading. Some experiments are performed on the V-notched compact tension (CT) and double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens made of polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) with two different notch opening angles.

A fracture criterion for sharp V-notched samples

International Journal of Fracture, 2003
The objective of this paper is to show the advantages of the cohesivecrack model for predicting fracture of V-notched components. Criticalvalues of the generalized stress intensity factor can be obtained fromthe knowledge of the material softening function and the elastic parameters, avoiding a cumbersome experimental work.

Stress Concentration Near Sharp and Rounded V-Notches

Materials Science, 2014
We present a survey of investigations of the stress concentration in elastic bodies weakened by sharp and rounded V-notches. Special attention is given to the unified approach to the study of stress distributions near the indicated stress concentrators in the case where the stress intensity factors at sharp tips of the notches are determined according ...

Vibrations Of Circular Plates Having V-notches Or Sharp Radial Cracks

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1993
Abstract This paper provides the first known free vibration data for circular plates having V-notches. A V-notch has bending moment singularities at its sharp corner due to the transverse vibratory motion. A theoretical analysis is undertaken using two sets of admissible displacement functions, (1) algebraic-trigonometric polynomials and (2) corner ...

Critical Value for Crack Propagation from Sharp V-Notch

Key Engineering Materials, 2013
The contribution is focused on estimation of a critical value of generalized stress intensity factor for crack propagation from sharp V-notches. Stress distribution around the tip of the V-notch is described on the base of generalized linear elastic fracture mechanics, because V-notch is a singular stress concentrator with stress singularity exponent ...

The dynamic behaviour of sharp V-notches under impact loading

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1987
Abstract The dynamic behaviour of sharp V-notches which are either symmetric or oblique to the longitudinal boundary of a homogeneous elastic and isotropic strip subjected to an impact plane pulse was studied by the method of caustics. The stress pulse impinging on the flanks of the notch reflects and diffracts in different ways depending on the ...

A comprehensive photoelastic study for mode I sharp V-notches

European Journal of Mechanics - A/Solids, 2013
Abstract The method of photoelasticity is used to study the effects of first non-singular stress term on isochromatic fringe patterns around the tip of a mode I sharp V-notch. Notches are divided into two categories: notches with opening angles a) less than 45°, and b) between 45° and 152°.

A finite fracture mechanics approach to structures with sharp V-notches

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2008
Criteria assuming that failure of quasi-brittle materials is affected by the stresses acting over a finite distance from the crack tip are widely used inside the scientific community. For instance, they have been applied to predict the failure load of specimens containing sharp V-notches, assuming as a critical parameter the average stress ahead the ...
