Shear-thinning drop formation

open access: yes, 2003
A volume-of-fluid numerical method is used to predict the dynamics of drop formation from a nozzle with a circular exit, directed vertically downwards in air, when the drop fluid is shear-thinning.

Actuation of Cell Layers in Three Dimensions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The alignment of fibers and cells in living tissues affect their mechanical properties and functionality. In this context, one can draw an analogy between tissues and nematic liquid crystal elastomers. We explore this analogy by growing fibroblasts on 2D‐patterned substrates and observing the contraction of cell sheets upon detachment from the

Flow of a shear-thinning fluid in a rectangular duct

open access: yes
We address the problem of steady laminar flow of a shear-thinning fluid in rectangular ducts, which is encountered in many systems, in particular, in microfluidic and biomedical devices.

Dexime: A Selectively Enzyme‐Degradable Hydrogel for Protein Therapeutic Release

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A dextrin‐oxime hydrogel (dexime) is produced using ketone or aldehyde modified dextrin and tetra‐oxyamine modified poly(ethylene glycol). The rheological and mechanical properties of dexime are tunable. Dexime is injectable, cytocompatible, hydrolytically stable, and selectively degradable by α‐amylase.

CFD Simulation and PIV Measurement of Local Fluid Velocity Distribution of Newtonian and Highly Shear-Thinning Fluid in an Impeller Rotational Region

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Engineering of Japan
Multistage impellers are widely used in the chemical industry to enhance the mixing of shear-thinning fluids. However, the local velocity around multistage impellers has not been sufficiently investigated.

Mechanically Spatio‐Chimeric Fibrin Assembly Enables Vascular‐Integrated Muscle Reconstruction for Volumetric Muscle Loss Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
SPARC (spatio‐chimeric, plasma‐based, anisotropic, and shear‐responsive construct) that integrates myogenic and vascular microenvironments within a single construct. The dual‐modulus matrix directs aligned myotube formation and endothelial network development, enabling a vascularized muscle implant that seamlessly anastomoses with host tissue and ...

A Super‐Adhesive Air Filter With Capillarity‐Mediated Spontaneous Particle Absorption via Dynamic Bond Exchange

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We address the inherently weak particle adhesion of conventional air filters by coating a dynamically crosslinked adhesive layer that delivers capillarity‐driven strong adhesion and particle absorption mediated by dynamic bond exchange. The resulting enhancement in particle adhesion enables efficient ultrafast (up to 20 m s−1) and omnidirectional ...
