Anisotropic stress and shear wave velocity: DEM studies of a crystalline granular material

Géotechnique Letters, 2015
Discrete element modelling (DEM) of a face-centred cubic assembly of spherical particles has been used to study the influence of anisotropic stress states on the shear wave velocity of a granular material. The shear waves were generated and detected in a way equivalent to the use of bender elements in laboratory testing.

Prediction of the Shear Wave Velocity V

2013
The paper examines the correlations to obtain rough estimates of the shear wave velocity VSfrom non-seismic dilatometer tests (DMT) and cone penetration tests (CPT). While the direct measurement of VSis obviously preferable, these correlations may turn out useful in various circumstances.

Using refracted shear waves for velocity estimation

Geophysical Prospecting, 2001
The most difficult part of multicomponent processing is the estimation of the shear‐wave velocity map for migration. We used refracted shear waves and a simple iterative method called wavefield continuation (WFC) to evaluate the shallow shear‐wave velocity profile on a real data example.

Shear wave velocity as a geotechnical parameter: an overview

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2016
Shear wave velocity, Vs, is a soil mechanical property that can be advantageously measured in both the field and laboratory under real and controlled conditions. The measured Vs values are customarily used in conjunction with other in situ (e.g., standard penetration test blow count, N-SPT, and cone penetration resistance, qc-CPT) and laboratory (e.g.,

Compressional and Shear Wave Velocities in the Upper Crust

1991
New reflectivity vs. grazing angle data at a number of thinly sedimented sites in the Pacific Ocean spanning 0.5 to 64 m.y. reveal that compressional and shear wave velocities, Vpand Vsof the uppermost crust increase with geologic age. Measurements between 40 and 64 m.y. reveal compressional and shear critical angles of 60 ± 3° and 9° ± 3° respectively.

Liquefaction susceptibility and shear wave velocity

2005
The influence of age and soil type on Cyclic Resistance Ratio (CRR) and normalized small strain shear wave velocity has been examined here using cyclic laboratory tests on frozen and high-quality undisturbed specimens of Pleistocene and Holocene non-cohesive soils comprised of silt to pebble size particles and in-situ shear wave velocity measurements ...

Ultrasonic Shear Wave Velocities in Sand and Clay

1965
Abstract : A study in which the ultrasonic shear wave velocity was measured in sand and clay is described. The use of the shear wave, rather than the longitudinal wave, offers the possibility of studying stress wave propagation through the skeleton of a soil independently of the pore fluid.
