Shear Deformation and Buckling of Columns

It is shown that the prediction of buckling loads of columns that are very weak in shear is crucially dependent on the choice of direction for the axial load of the column in the buckled configuration. Examples are given showing the wide differences in buckling load predicted by different choices.

Castellated Beam Web Buckling in Shear

Tests of four castellated beams are described, in which the buckling of the web-post between openings was the focus of interest. Evidence of web-post buckling was observed in all test beams, although one also underwent lateral displacements. Elastic finite-element analysis was used to predict the buckling loads.

Buckling of Flexural-Shear Plates

In this paper, tall buildings with shear-wall structures and with narrow rectangular plane configuration are modeled as flexural-shear plates for buckling analysis. The differential equations that govern the buckling behavior of flexural-shear plates, with and without considering shear deformation of shear-wall structures, are established.
