Buckling of a sheared cholesteric liquid crystal

Physical Review A, 1985
We present qualitative and quantitative observations on structural instabilities in a cholesteric liquid crystal subjected to static shear. Using a model of a cholesteric that is tilted under shear, we find that, in a Landau--de Gennes coarse-grained picture, buckling instabilities can be created when the strain is larger than a critical value.

Shear Buckling of Bars

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1960
It is shown that a perfectly straight bar, subjected to a state of uniform shear stress, will buckle, in a manner similar to a column under compression, if the shear stress exceeds a certain critical value. The buckling equations are obtained by the Newtonian approach and also by the application of the principle of minimum potential energy. In order to

Buckling of Shear Loading Plates with Strengthenings

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2000
AbstractThe paper treats the influence of either weakening or strengthening of rectangular plates on the critical external buckling load. The plate geometry was chosen so that the buckling process takes place in the elastic range. The simply supported plate is loaded with shear forces per unit length which act on its edges.

Buckling of Quasisinusoidally corrugated plates in Shear

AIAA Journal, 1986
This paper determines the buckling stress of quasisinusoidally corrugated plates in shear. Governing equations are obtained by the variations of potential energy, which is evaluated by assuming the buckling deflection components in the form of a Fourier series.

Shear-flexural buckling of columns

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1990
Elastic flexural buckling formulas for columns under an end-concentrated load and axial uniformly distributed load (or selfweight), found in the literature or newly derived by the writers, are summarized herein. However, these formulas overestimate the critical buckling loads when the columns are short or consist of struts connected by lacing bars or ...

Optimal Design of Plates for Shear Buckling

Civil-Comp Proceedings, 1997
Summary: This paper is concerned with the structural optimization problem of maximizing the shear buckling load of rectangular plates for a given volume of material. Optimality conditions are first derived via variational calculus, and a double cosine thickness varying plate and a hybrid double sine thickness varying plate are then finely tuned in a ...
