Interaction of monopoles, dipoles and turbulence with a shear flow

open access: yes, 2016
Direct numerical simulations have been conducted to examine the evolution of eddies in the presence of large-scale shear flows. The numerical experiments consist of initial-value-problems in which monopolar and dipolar vortices as well as driven ...

Are West African Heat‐Lows Analogous to Dry Tropical Cyclones?

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Heat‐lows qualitatively resemble dry tropical cyclones (TCs), though their underlying physics has yet to be compared. In this study, we show that West African transient heat‐low climatology correlates well with TC potential intensity generalised over land.

Numerical simulations on effects of turbulence on the size spectrum of sinking particles in ocean surface boundary layer

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
Sinking particles in the ocean play a crucial role in the climate system by transporting materials, such as carbon, deep into the ocean. The amount of this transport is influenced by the net sinking speed of the particles and the amount of material ...

Coherent Stokes Raman Scattering for Simultaneous Measurement of CO2 and CH4 Temperatures

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
A three‐beam hybrid fs/ps CSRS method is employed to excite the rovibrational transitions in the Fermi‐dyad of CO2$$ {}_2 $$ and the v2$$ {v}_2 $$ mode of CH4$$ {}_4 $$. Time‐domain spectroscopic models are developed to extract the fuel and flame temperature profiles from experimental CH4$$ {}_4 $$ and CO2$$ {}_2 $$ spectra in a diffusion flame ...

Evaluation of Eddy Viscosity Models in Predicting Free- Stream Turbulence Penetration

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, 2013
Turbulence schemes have long been developed and examined for their accuracy and stability in a variety of environments. While many industrial flows are highly turbulent, models have rarely been tested to explore whether their accuracy withstands such ...

High‐pressure homogenization and pH‐shifting modification of hazelnut protein isolates: Functional enhancement, allergenicity reduction, and probiotic microencapsulation performance

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Plant‐based proteins, such as hazelnut protein isolates (HPIs), often exhibit limited solubility and functionality, as well as allergenic potential, thereby limiting their applicability in food products. This investigation sought to improve the techno‐functional characteristics of HPI and mitigate its allergenicity via high‐pressure

Turbulence Attenuation by Small Particles in Simple Shear Flows

open access: yes, 1999
This paper is concerned with the influence of a dispersed phase on carrier flow turbulence. The carrier flow is assumed to be a simple homogeneous shear, in which the fluid Reynolds stress tensor is independent of spatial location, but in which there is ...

Bronchial Mucosal Abnormalities in Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS) is a challenging variant of airway stenosis associated with consistent distal airway abnormalities on bronchoscopy, including pits, depressions, and striations. Despite these findings, most patients demonstrate normal or mild–moderate obstruction on spirometry.

High resolution methods for incompressible, compressible and variable density flows.

open access: yes, 2004
The uid dynamics community has dealt with a number of numerical challenges since the 1950's. These include the development of numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws with particular interest in capturing shock wave propagation and related ...

A Numerical study of resistance in a rough walled channel flow where the ratio of roughness length scale to the depth of flow varies over a wide range [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Numerical calculations were performed over a variety of two-dimensional rib roughness configurations in which the ratio of flow depth to roughness height was varied from 1.1 to 40.
