Friction and Shear Strength of Polymers

A S L E Transactions, 1977
The authors have measured the shear strength and friction of a number of polymers. The shear strength measurements were made on thin films of the polymers deposited on hard, smooth substrates. The values of the coefficients of friction obtained from these shear strength measurements have been compared with the values obtained when bulk polymer slides ...

Nanoscale Frictional Dissipation into Shear-Stressed Polymer Relaxations

Physical Review Letters, 2009
Sliding friction between a silicon tip and a highly cross-linked polyaryletherketone film is studied using friction force microscopy. The friction force as a function of temperature between 150 and 500 K shows distinctive maxima corresponding to alpha and beta polymer relaxations in dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).

Shear Strength and Polymer Friction

1974
The friction coefficient of thin polymer sheets under high loads can be accounted for by a simple extension of the adhesion theory of friction in which the pressure dependence of the shear strength of the polymer is taken into consideration. Recent measurements on polypropylene films, as well as earlier data on several other polymers, are used to ...

Fracture toughness of snow in shear under friction

Physical Review E, 2002
The fracture toughness of snow in shear is one of the most relevant parameters when studying the mechanics of snow slab avalanche release. Double-cantilever snow beams were loaded asymmetrically to determine K(IIc). If crack surfaces touch under applied pressure, the fracture toughness in shear of snow (rho=247 kg m(-3)) is K(IIc)=680+/-60 Pa m(1/2 ...

Reducing shear and friction: Parafricta undergarments

Nursing and Residential Care, 2008
Andy Kerr discusses the role that Parafricta undergarments can play in reducing the potential for pressure ulcers in immobile patients.

On double shearing in frictional materials

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2006
AbstractThis paper evaluates the mechanical behaviour of yielding frictional geomaterials. The general Double Shearing model describes this behaviour. Non‐coaxiality of stress and plastic strain increments for plane strain conditions forms an important part of this model. The model is based on a micro‐mechanical and macro‐mechanical formulation.

Elastic–plastic shear deformation of frictional granular materials

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 1983
AbstractA theory describing plastic deformation of granular (purely frictional) materials is presented. The theory is developed from postulates for energy dissipation and for the mode of plastic deformation. The postulates are based on some restrictions for the properties of granular materials and on a frictional analogy.

Anisotropic Elasticity in Sheared Packings of Frictional Disks

2013
We study the effect of unilaterality of the interparticle interactions on the elastic response of granular materials. The anisotropy of the contact network is related to the opening of contacts during quasi-static shear deformations. As a result, local incremental constitutive relations describing the evolution of stress in terms of shear and ...
