Concepts of Shear Friction Applied to Masonry Shear Walls
The Masonry Society Journal, 2013Currently, the TMS-402 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (2011) contains no provisions for shear friction in concrete and clay masonry wall construction. Various concrete and masonry codes have equations that are primarily based upon Mohr Coulomb theory with a coefficient of friction applied to the summation of the axial load and ...

Friction and Shear Strength of Polymers
A S L E Transactions, 1977The authors have measured the shear strength and friction of a number of polymers. The shear strength measurements were made on thin films of the polymers deposited on hard, smooth substrates. The values of the coefficients of friction obtained from these shear strength measurements have been compared with the values obtained when bulk polymer slides ...

Nanoscale Frictional Dissipation into Shear-Stressed Polymer Relaxations
Physical Review Letters, 2009Sliding friction between a silicon tip and a highly cross-linked polyaryletherketone film is studied using friction force microscopy. The friction force as a function of temperature between 150 and 500 K shows distinctive maxima corresponding to alpha and beta polymer relaxations in dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).

Shear Strength and Polymer Friction
1974The friction coefficient of thin polymer sheets under high loads can be accounted for by a simple extension of the adhesion theory of friction in which the pressure dependence of the shear strength of the polymer is taken into consideration. Recent measurements on polypropylene films, as well as earlier data on several other polymers, are used to ...

Fracture toughness of snow in shear under friction
Physical Review E, 2002The fracture toughness of snow in shear is one of the most relevant parameters when studying the mechanics of snow slab avalanche release. Double-cantilever snow beams were loaded asymmetrically to determine K(IIc). If crack surfaces touch under applied pressure, the fracture toughness in shear of snow (rho=247 kg m(-3)) is K(IIc)=680+/-60 Pa m(1/2 ...
