Hydraulic and mechanical properties of glacial sediments beneath Unteraargletscher, Switzerland: implications for glacier basal motion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The force on a ‘ploughmeter’ and subglacial water pressure have been measured in the same borehole at Unteraargletscher, Switzerland, in order to investigate ice–sediment coupling and the motion at the base of a soft-bedded glacier.

Control of Polarization and Polar Helicity in BiFeO3 by Epitaxial Strain and Interfacial Chemistry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In BiFeO3 thin films, the interplay of interfacial chemistry, electrostatics, and epitaxial strain is engineered to stabilize homohelicity in polarization textures at the domain scale. The synergistic use of a Bi2O2‐terminated Aurivillius buffer layer and a highly anisotropic compressive epitaxial strain offers new routes to control the polar‐texture ...

Variability of Internally Generated Turbulence in an Estuary, from 100 Days of Continuous Observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present detailed observations of internally generated turbulence in a sheared, stratified natural flow, as well as an analysis of the external factors leading to its generation and temporal variability.

Shaping Ti3C2 MXene Nanospheres for Precision Near‐Infrared Photothermal Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, we report producing spherical MXenes via fs laser fragmentation of Ti3C2 flakes in liquid medium. The nanoparticles demonstrated pronounced light absorption and high photothermal conversion efficiencies of 68% and 63% under heating with NIR‐I and NIR‐II lasers, respectively.

Investigation of the Seismic Behavior of Framed Tube Buildings Considering Soil Structure Interaction [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Structural and Construction Engineering, 2019
In recent years, the framed tube system has been known as the most efficient structural system for the high-rise buildings. The entire lateral resistance in the framed tube structures is provided by closely spaced exterior columns and deep spandrel beams.

Meta‐Rod Mechanical Metamaterials With Programmable Reconfiguration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Existing mechanical metamaterials achieve programmable large deformations in planar square or cubic configurations, restricted by required complex boundary conditions. This research proposes a 1D metamaterial, Meta‐rod, with linear, bending, twisting, area, and volume deformation modes.

Analysis and Study on Bending Vibration Frequency of New Corrugated Steel Web Composite Box Girder

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2021
In order to accurately analyze the bending vibration frequency of the new composite box girder, the effects of web folding effect, shear lag, and shear deformation are comprehensively considered in this paper, and the elastic control differential ...

Sustainable Catalyst‐Free PLG Networks: Recyclability, Biodegradability, and Functional Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A catalyst‐additive free covalent adaptable network is developed from star‐shaped poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide) cross‐linked with pyromellitic dianhydride, enabling internal carboxylic acid‐driven transesterification. The resulting biodegradable network exhibits mechanical robustness (Young's modulus ≈1.6 GPa), complete recyclability, rapid biodegradation

Experimental Study on Shear Lag Effect of Long-Span Wide Prestressed Concrete Cable-Stayed Bridge Box Girder under Eccentric Load

open access: yesConstruction Materials
Based on the engineering background of the wide-width single cable-stayed bridge, the shear lag effects of the cross-section of these bridge box girders under the action of the eccentric load were experimentally studied. The behavior of shear lag effects

Shear Lag Analysis of Simply Supported Box Girders Considering Axial Equilibrium and Shear Deformation

open access: yesBuildings, 2023
The conventional methods used to analyze the shear lag effect in simply supported box girders assume that the neutral axis of the section coincides with the centroid, which does not strictly satisfy the axial equilibrium condition.
