(Dis)continuous shear thickening in frictionless granular media? [PDF]
Continuous and discontinuous shear thickening are commonly observed in sheared dense suspensions but are still not fully understood. Although micro-friction at particle-particle contacts is widely accepted as the dominating origin of discontinuous shear ...

Shear thickening of cornstarch suspensions as a re-entrant jamming transition [PDF]
We study the rheology of cornstarch suspensions, a dense system of non-Brownian particles that exhibits shear thickening, i.e. a viscosity that increases with increasing shear rate.

Material removal characteristics of magnetic-field enhanced shear thickening polishing technology
To achieve the efficient and high-quality machining of hard and brittle ceramics used in various industries, in addition to other materials that are difficult to process, a magnetic-field enhanced shear thickening polishing technology was developed in ...

Generality of shear thickening in suspensions [PDF]
Suspensions are of wide interest and form the basis for many smart fluids. For most suspensions, the viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate, i.e. they shear thin. Few are reported to do the opposite, i.e.

A cornstarch suspension is the quintessential particulate system that exhibits shear thickening. By adding large non-Brownian spheres to a cornstarch suspension, we show that shear thickening can be significantly enhanced. More precisely, the shear-thickening transition is found to be increasingly shifted to lower critical shear rates.

Shear induced rigidity in athermal materials: a unified statistical framework [PDF]
Recent studies of athermal systems such as dry grains and dense, non-Brownian suspensions have shown that shear can lead to solidification through the process of shear jamming in grains and discontinuous shear thickening in suspensions.

Shear-Thickening Behavior of Precipitated Calcium Carbonate Particles Suspensions in Glycerine
For developing a new composite material owning shear-thickening characteristic, the rheological behaviors of nano-sized precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) particles with irregular sharp in glycerine were investigated systematically by means of steady ...

Shear thickening (dilatancy) in concentrated dispersions [PDF]
AbstractA new criterion is introduced for the onset of shear thickening in a concentrated dispersion. The criterion follows from the assumption that shear thickening occurs when the shear forces overrule the interparticle forces. A force balance at small interparticle distances is used to predict the dependence of this critical shear rate on the volume

Shear-thickening fluids in biologically relevant agents. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: The rheology of shear thickening fluids is well characterized for many physical applications, however the literature surrounding biologically or cryobiologically compatible shear thickening fluids is less well understood. OBJECTIVE: This study examined fluids consisting of corn-derived hydroxyethyl starch with a variety of sugars and ...
