Structural damping using encapsulated shear thickening fluids
SPIE Proceedings, 2012Smart structures with tunable damping and stiffness characteristics are of high interest to aerospace applications, but often require an external power source to be activated. This can be avoided by using highly concentrated silica suspensions, which exhibit a shear-thickening behavior, linked to a dramatic increase in viscous dissipation.

Characterization and Application of Shear Thickening Fluids
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013The shear thickening phenomenon was explained in this paper. The characteristics of shear thickening fluids (STFs), including reversibility and liquid to solid transition at critical shear rate were presented. Also, the applications of STFs for protective clothing and equipment were discussed.
