Unsteady flow, clusters, and bands in a model shear-thickening fluid [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2020
We analyse the flow curves of a two-dimensional assembly of granular particles which are interacting via frictional contact forces. For packing fractions slightly below jamming, the fluid undergoes a large scale instability, implying a range of stress and strainrates where no stationary flow can exist.

Influence of Geometric Design on Mechanical Performance of Auxetic Metastructure

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Strategic geometric reinforcement transforms auxetic performance. This study evaluates 3D‐printed arrowhead metastructures, revealing that a modified design with local ring reinforcement suppresses premature failure to achieve superior energy absorption and structural efficiency.

Shear fronts in shear-thickening suspensions

open access: yes, 2018
We study the fronts that appear when a shear-thickening suspension is submitted to a sudden driving force at a boundary. Using a quasi-one-dimensional experimental geometry, we extract the front shape and the propagation speed from the suspension flow ...

Experimental and Numerical Modal Analysis of Composite Sandwich Structures Using Surfboards as Model Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents an experimental and numerical modal investigation of composite sandwich structures using surfboards as model systems. By comparing different core materials and reinforcement strategies, the study demonstrates how local stiffeners influence vibrational response and introduce characteristic modal features, highlighting modal ...

Numerical simulations of spatiotemporal instabilities in discontinuous shear-thickening fluids [PDF]

open access: yes
Discontinuous shear-thickening (DST) fluids exhibit unique instability properties in a wide range of flow conditions. We present numerical simulations of a scalar model for DST fluids in a planar simple shear using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics ...

Shear Banding in Time-Dependent Flows of Complex Fluids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We explore theoretically the time-dependent rheological response of complex fluids to step stress, shear startup and strain ramp deformations. We study soft glassy materials and entangled polymeric materials above and below the glass transition using the

Coating Artificial Spider Silk Fiber with Magnetic FeCo: An Effective Strategy for Creating a Flexible Magneto‐Responsive Material

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An original method is presented for producing artificial spider silk fibers with magnetic and magnetomechanical responsiveness, which consists in coating them with a nanometer‐thick layer of FeCo alloy by sputtering deposition. The challenge of combining organic materials and inorganic magnetic nanostructures is addressed, thus taking a step forward ...

Puncture resistance behaviors and efficiencies of angle-interlock fabrics impregnated with shear thickening fluids

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2022
STFs impregnation is an effective method to prepare impact resistance fabrics without sacrificing their flexibility, and the structural features are essential factors affecting the puncture resistance behaviors of these fabrics.

Negative pressure in shear thickening band of a dilatant fluid [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2016
We perform experiments and numerical simulations to investigate spatial distribution of pressure in a sheared dilatant fluid of the Taylor-Couette flow under a constant external shear stress. In a certain range of shear stress, the flow undergoes the shear thickening oscillation around 20 Hz.

Texoskeletons: Developing the Fundamental Technologies for Creating Intelligent Soft Robotic Clothing With Integrated 1D Sensors and Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Traditional wearable exoskeletons rely on rigid structures, which limit comfort, flexibility, and everyday usability. This work introduces the fundamental technologies to create the first soft, lightweight, intelligent textile‐based exoskeletons (Texoskeletons) built using 1D sensors and actuators.
