Seismic waves with tensile stress, high amplitude, and low frequency are most likely to trigger block instability and sliding. Blocks with a single sliding surface are more prone to movement than those with multiple constraints, and roof‐positioned blocks are especially vulnerable to slide.

Shear Wave Splitting Analysis to Estimate Fracture Orientation and Frequency Dependent Anisotropy [PDF]
Shear wave splitting is a well-known method for indication of orientation, radius, and length of fractures in subsurface layers. In this paper, a three component near offset VSP data acquired from a fractured sandstone reservoir in southern part of Iran ...

The tensile strength of granite, a proposed host for nuclear waste, degrades severely above 400°C. We link this to specific microcracking patterns captured by acoustic emission, establishing a scientific basis for assessing repository safety under thermal load.

Teleseismic shear-wave splitting analyses are often performed by reversing the splitting process through the application of frequency- or time-domain operations aimed at minimizing the transverse-component energy of waveforms.

Systematic bias in shear-wave splitting measurement
SUMMARY Shear-wave splitting measurement returns two parameters related to the fabric of the upper mantle: the orientation of the fast polarization (fast direction), and a measure of the intensity and thickness of the fabric known as the split time. Spatial statistics of compiled splitting measurements indicate that the fast direction
