Seismic Shear Waves in Engineering

Measurements of seismic shear wave velocity and absorption coefficient can find use in soil and rock mechanics, foundation studies, structures, slope stability analysis, and the determination of dynamic elastic moduli. Shear-wave magnetometry

A method of measuring low magnetic fields based on the magnetoelastic effect in amorphous magnetic materials is described. Preliminary results indicate a sensitivity of order 2.5 nT in the frequency range 0-1.6 Hz. The potential sensitivity is estimated to be better than 1 pT.

Two examples of steep very large amplitude waves are described. One occurs on flows below weirs or sluices and is known as the wave hydraulic jump. A simple analysis is presented to describe its main features. The other example occurs in backwash from surf and has not previously been described.

A unifying fractional wave equation for compressional and shear waves

This study has been motivated by the observed difference in the range of the power-law attenuation exponent for compressional and shear waves. Usually compressional attenuation increases with frequency to a power between 1 and 2, while shear wave attenuation often is described with powers less than 1.

The exact analytical solution of the extended Rayleigh equation for the case of periodic compressible shear flow is found. The dispersion relation of the problem is the Hill determinant. It is found that the sound waves in shear flow have a dispersion and its velocity field contains a solenoidal part.
