2000U Hrvatskoj ima oko 490.000 ovaca, od čega se oko 90% uzgaja za meso, a svega 10% za mlijeko, dok vuna nema ekonomski značaj. Proizvodnja i prerada ovčjeg mlijeka raširena je naotocima (Pag, Cres, Brač, u Istri i Dalmaciji), a manje u unutrašnjosti zemlje.
