Mold flow of sheet molding compound

Advanced Composite Materials, 1993
Mold flow of sheet molding compound (SMC) is investigated by using a rectangular mold of 500 x 1000 mm attached with some sensors at various points in the mold and using a 500 ton press with a leveling control device. Molding conditions and the compositions of SMC are varied in order to investigate the mold flow.

Inserts for fastening sheet molding compounds

Composite Structures, 1987
Stainless steel inserts used for fastening sheet molding compound (SMC) are being developed. Using these molded-in inserts, SMC components can be assembled without protrusions. The inserts consist of two mating surfaces which interlock through the existence of a shoulder male boss and a shoulder female counterbore. Repeated assembly and disassembly can

Sheet molding compound compression‐molding flow

Polymer Engineering & Science, 1989
AbstractMost available descriptions of sheet molding compound (SMC) flow are based on a generalized Hele‐Shaw type model. These analyses have several deficiencies. SMC slip at the wall is neglected, and unrealistic rheological models are used. Consequently, molding pressures are incorrectly predicted but, nonetheless, the fill patterns for thin, large ...

Improving the crack resistance of bulk molding compounds and sheet molding compounds

Polymer Engineering & Science, 1978
AbstractFiber‐reinforced plastics exhibit two types of mechanical failure: gross fracture and microcracking. Gross fracture involves both matrix and fiber failures. Principal resistance to crack propagation derives from partial decoupling of fibers and then stressing, remove finite volumes of them to fracture.

The rheology and mold flow of polyester sheet molding compound

Polymer Composites, 1981
AbstractFlow properties of sheet molding compounds (SMC) were measured by several rhemeters. Shear viscosities of SMC paste can be fitted by the Carreau viscosity equation and reduced to a single master curve by plotting the reduced shear viscosity (η/η0) against reduced shear rate (\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \dot \gamma $

Compounding of Sheet Molding Compound

Polymer-Plastics Technology and Engineering, 1984
Abstract Sheet molding compound (SMC) is a complex composite of specialty resins to which thickeners, inorganic fillers, fiber reinforcements, catalyst, mold re- lease, and pigment are added. It is produced in sheet form and can be molded by compression, transfer, and thermoset injection methods.

Mesostructure development during molding of sheet molding compounds

Polymer Composites, 1996
AbstractExperiments have been carried out with sheet molding compounds in which the amount of shear developed during molding was varied by changing the charge size. The effects of pressure and temperature were also investigated. The moldings were characterized by their mesostructures and the influence of the mesostructures on the Izod toughness and ...

Cure analysis of sheet molding compound in molds with substructures

Polymer Engineering & Science, 1989
AbstractThe effects of material flow, heat transfer, part geometry, and curing agents on the cure of sheet molding compounds (SMC) in molds with substructures were analyzed both experimentally and numerically. It was found that heat transfer during mold filling has a profound effect on the cure pattern, especially for fastcure resins molded for parts ...

Flow Analysis of Sheet Molding Compounds in Compression Molding

International Polymer Processing, 1991
Abstract A series of experiments and a numerical simulation were carried out to investigate the flow of silly putty and sheet molding compound (SMC) at various processing conditions in compression molding. The flow resistance and the interface friction of both materials were characterized by using a squeeze flow rheometer and the ring ...

Anisotropy in sheet molding compounds during compression molding

Polymer Composites, 1997
AbstractThis paper deals with an improved mathematical description of the anisotropic behavior of chopped fiber reinforced polymer composites, SMC (sheet molding compound). The material possesses isotropy in its planar direction and anisotropy normal to its plane. Axisymmetric compression and plane strain compression moldings are simulated via uniaxial
