Background: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a bilateral, chronic, allergic inflammation of the ocular surface with debilitating ocular signs and symptoms. We compared the efficacies and safeties of 1% tacrolimus eye drops and 1% dexamethasone eye drops in managing unilateral shield ulcers and corneal epitheliopathy secondary to VKC.

Shield Ulcer in Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis
We present a 14-year-old girl with shield ulcer due to vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Slit lamp examination revealed more prominent giant papillae on superior tarsal conjunctiva giving cobblestone appearance in the right eye than in the left eye. In addition, an oval-shaped shield ulcer with a transparent base on the right cornea was detected.
