Shiftwork and the older worker
Experimental Aging Research, 1993The number of workers employed on shiftwork is large, and it appears to be increasing. The impact of shiftwork on the occupational safety and health of workers is complex and involves both biological and behavioral variables. Current conceptual models propose that the impact of shiftwork, where night work is involved, increases with exposure.

Abstract Like transmeridian travel, participation in shiftwork can disrupt human circadian rhythms. It should be noted that crossing time-zones and working shifts are not chronobiologically identical. When multiple time-zones are crossed, a person is normally exposed to all the zeitgebers of the new environment, whereas during rotating ...

Ergonomics, 1976
First the time elements of a working day, the duration of working time and the time positioning of working time are treated under ergonomical aspects. Second the reasons for shiftwork, different types of shift work as well as effects on health and on family and social life are discussed.

Pre-adaptation to shiftwork in space
Acta Astronautica, 1993Astronauts are often required to work in shift schedules. To test pre-mission adaptation strategies and effects on the circadian system, a study was performed using microgravity simulation by head-down bedrest. Eight male subjects were studied over 4 control days, and 7 days each for pre-mission adaptation, bedrest, and readjustment.

Shift workers are more disturbed by changes in eating patterns than in sleeping patterns. The ill effects of shift working have, in any case, been exaggerated where they have not been invented.

Educational programmes for shiftworkers, their families, and prospective shiftworkers
Ergonomics, 1993The concept of educational programmes for shiftworkers has good face validity, but research verification is not evident in the literature. Efforts to date to provide users with extensive information are commendable, but they do not appear to be adequate for the education of shiftworkers.

Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 1979
The recent increase in the incidence of shiftwork has been accompanied by a change in the type of task typically performed by the shiftworker. The technological advances which have produced both these effects have meant that the shiftworker is more likely to be engaged in cognitive, mentally taxing tasks than the predominantly perceptual-motor ones ...

The purpose of this study was to review the relationship of shiftwork to industrial injuries, and possible methods of injury control. The primary method was a systematic review of the published literature. The Cochrane Collaboration protocol was used to conduct the literature search.Studies were included if they addressed the issue of industrial ...

Abstract.— Research concerning the social psychological, physiological, psychoneurotic, and psychosomatic consequences of shiftwork is reviewed with main emphasis on Scandinavian investigations. Most reports have found that shiftwork, especially working in three shifts, has a large number of negative social and sanitary consequences.

First the most important problems of shiftworkers are discussed, i. e. living against the "inner clock", disturbances of sleep and appetite, gastrointestinal complaints, diseases, disturbances of the social life, faults and accidents. Thereafter a list of potenzial measures to reduce the problems of shiftworkers is presented and one measure -the design
