Abstract Examination of 1102 representative strains of Shigella sonnei isolated in London in the past two years has shown that 70% of strains are now resistant to three or more antibacterial drugs. Neomycin-resistant strains, though uncommon, are isolated more frequently than in the past.

Immunogenic and some other properties of Sh, sonnei "Ufa" phage DNA were investigated. This DNA has been shown to possess high immunogenic activity indicating the presence of an unusual base. The base is distinct from 5-OmC, glucosylated 5-OmC, 5-OmU or dihydroxypentyluracil.

Immunobiological properties of native lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from virulent and avirulent strains of Shigella sonnei bacteria (LPS-V and LPS-A, respectively) were studied. In avirulent bacteria, LPS-V induced immunosuppressive activity specific of the virulent strain. LPS of the avirulent strain, whereas LPS-A lacked this property.

Shigella sonnei Bacteremia

A 25-year-old septic-system excavator was hospitalized for treatment of severe dysentery. Cultures from blood and feces were positive for Shigella sonnei , an organism not previously reported as invading the blood stream of an adult. The occurrence of specific infection was retrospectively documented by special immunological studies.

To the Editor.— The article of Ross et al (221:45, 1972) points out apparent geographic differences in the distribution of ampicillin-resistant shigellae; observed 3.7% from 1967 to 1970 in Atlanta as contrasted with his own survey, which shows an increase to 95% ampicillin resistance in 1971.
