Genetic characterization of multidrug resistance in Shigella spp. from Japan [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Microbiology, 2006
This study characterized the genetic basis of antimicrobial resistance of a number of Shigella spp. isolated from humans from 2000 to 2004 in Hiroshima prefecture, Japan. A total of 26 isolates of Shigella spp. were included in this study. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests revealed high levels of resistance, especially to ampicillin, streptomycin ...

Pathogen-specific risk of chronic gastrointestinal disorders following bacterial causes of foodborne illness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
BACKGROUND: The US CDC estimates over 2 million foodborne illnesses are annually caused by 4 major enteropathogens: non-typhoid Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., Shigella spp. and Yersinia enterocoltica.

Distinct Nasal Microbiome Profiles and Prediction Model for Allergic Rhinitis, Nonallergic Rhinitis, and Healthy Children

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
The alpha and beta diversity of the nasal microbiome differed among children with allergic rhinitis (AR), nonallergic rhinitis (NAR), and healthy controls (HCs). Compared to HC, AR had more Escherichia‐Shigella, Negativicoccus, and Campylobacter, while NAR had more Dolosigranulum and fewer Enterobacteriaceae.

Effects of Live and Heat‐Treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 in Adults With Allergic Rhinitis: A Randomised, Double‐Blind, Placebo‐Controlled Trial

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial evaluated the effects of live probiotic and HT postbiotic B. longum CECT 7347 in adults with moderate–severe allergic rhinitis. Postbiotic supplementation for 8 weeks significantly reduced CSMS and dSS, exceeding the established CSMS MCID with a 33% greater improvement, when compared to placebo ...

Shigella Effector VirA Suppresses Plant Immunity by Compromising PRA1.F3‐Dependent Accumulation of FLS2 at the Plasma Membrane

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Surface immune receptors such as flagellin‐sensitive 2 (FLS2) are critical for plant defence, and their accumulation at the plasma membrane is tightly controlled by the endomembrane system. Here, we identify the Arabidopsis thaliana prenylated Rab acceptor PRA1.F3 as a positive regulator required for efficient accumulation of FLS2 at the ...

Serum immune response to Shigella protein antigens in rhesus monkeys and humans infected with Shigella spp [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1986
The serum antibody response to proteins encoded by the virulence-associated plasmid of Shigella flexneri was determined in monkeys challenged with virulent S. flexneri serotype 2a. With water-extractable antigen in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, a significant increase in antibody titer against proteins from a plasmid-carrying, virulent strain of

Detection of OXA-181 Carbapenemase in Shigella flexneri

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases
We report the detection of OXA-181 carbapenemase in an azithromycin-resistant Shigella spp. bacteria in an immunocompromised patient. The emergence of OXA-181 in Shigella spp.

Potential of a novel and thermostable recombinant phage endolysin of Escherichia phage KW1E_UTAR against Shigella spp. [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
Shigella causes millions of cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, mainly affecting children in impoverished countries. Shigellosis outbreaks have been linked to waterborne transmission, and chlorination is commonly used to disinfect water ...
