Shigella spp. are pathogens responsible for the global burden of diarrhoeal disease. The genus is comprised of four species: Shigella sonnei, Shigella boydii, Shigella flexneri and Shigella dysenteriae, each phylogenetically different but phenotypically and pathogenically similar.
