The shimmy oscillations of a truck’s front wheels with dependent suspension are studied to investigate how shimmy depends on changes in inflation pressure, with emphasis on the inclusion of four nonlinear tyre characteristics to improve the accuracy of ...

Shimmy analysis of straddle-type monorail vehicle with single-axle bogies based on factor model
Vehicle System Dynamics, 2023Shimmy is one of the important factors affecting the ride comfort and lateral stability of straddle-type monorail vehicles with single-axle bogies (SMVS).

The shimmy, also known as the shim-me-sha-wabble, is a jazz dance that features the upper body, especially the shoulders, shaking and quivering horizontally from side to side, such that a dancer’s ‘chemise’ might shift and slide. The dance, often associated with female sexuality, rose to mass popularity in the United States in the late 1910s and early ...

Alleviation of Shimmy in a Typical Fighter Aircraft
Volume 5: Structures, Structural Dynamics & MaterialsLanding gears of aircraft may undergo oscillations known as shimmy during takeoff and landing. Significant levels of shimmy were experienced in the nose landing gear (NLG) of a typical fighter aircraft, which led to pilot discomfort and increased the ...

Abstract : A T-37 nose gear is modeled as a multiple lumped mass system with four torsional-degrees-of-freedom and one lateral-degree-of-freedom. Fuselage flexibility is incorporated and a Von Schlippe tire model is used. The equations of motion for various input conditions are solved using measured gear properties.

Perturbation Analysis of Nonlinear Wheel Shimmy
Journal of Aircraft, 2001A perturbation analysis of nonlinear wheel shimmy in aircraft landing gear is presented for nonlinear models that include terms due to coulomb friction between the oleo struts and freeplay in the torque links. The method of multiple timescales is used to obtain general expressions for the limit-cycle amplitude and the frequency that are functions of ...

Theory of the shimmy phenomenon
Mechanics of Solids, 2010The shimmy phenomenon is the appearance of angular self-excited vibrations of the carriage wheels. Such self-excited vibrations provide a serious safety hazard for motion, which explains the great interest of scientists in this phenomenon [1–6]. This problem is most serious for the aircraft fore wheels.

<div class="htmlview paragraph">Shimmying, although known for many years, did not become a serious problem until the arrival of the balloon tire and the four-wheel brake. Apparently, shimmying is of two kinds: the low-speed variety, which is merely a persistent front-wheel wabble without an abnormal bouncing of the axle, and the high-speed ...

A Stability Analysis of the Wheel Shimmy
Volume 1: Advanced Computational Mechanics; Advanced Simulation-Based Engineering Sciences; Virtual and Augmented Reality; Applied Solid Mechanics and Material Processing; Dynamical Systems and Control, 2012The wheel shimmy is a classical non-linear problem. The most frequently used approach to study this phenomena is based on linearized low degree of freedom models, that from one side, thanks the simplicity of the equations of the motion, allows to evaluate the stability with classical stability-analysis approach, but from the other side it limits the ...
