On the spectral properties of shock-capturing schemes
Journal of Computational Physics, 2006In this short note we analyze the performance of nonlinear, shock-capturing schemes in wavenumber space. For this purpose we propose a new representation for the approximate dispersion relation which accounts to leading order for nonlinear effects. Several examples are presented, which confirm that the present theory yields an improved qualitative ...

Recognition of shock-wave patterns from shock-capturing solutions.
A new technique for detecting shock waves and recognising the shock patterns in compressible flow solutions computed by means of shock-capturing solvers is proposed and discussed. This newly developed technique uses the Hough transform and a least squares fit to further post-process the data provided by a classical shock detection technique based on ...

Abstract This paper describes an innovative technique that is capable of automatically detecting shock-wave shapes and shock-interaction patterns by post-processing the results obtained from a shock-capturing calculation using any of the available, state-of-the-art, shock-detection techniques.

Shock-Fitting Versus Shock-Capturing Modeling of Strong Shocks in Nonequilibrium Plasmas
In this paper, a supersonic flow of an argon plasma around a cylinder has been investigated comparing shock fitting and shock capturing techniques. Shock-capturing codes are algorithmically simple, but are plagued by a number of numerical troubles, particularly evident when the shocks are strong and the grids unstructured.

Lie Symmetry Preservation and Shock-Capturing Methods
SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 2008It is known that some traditional shock-capturing schemes, including Godunov- or Roe-type schemes, generate downstream oscillatory wave patterns that cannot be effectively dampened by the dissipation methods they provide. The theme of this paper is to understand the formation and behavior at these upstream/downstream patterns from the point view of the
