Short circuit analysis and protection of power module IGBTs
Twentieth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2005. APEC 2005., 2005In this paper, the failure modes of power module IGBTs have been experimentally studied by focusing on the short-circuit behaviour of the devices, with reference to the hard switching fault (HSF) and fault under load (FUL) types of fault. In particular, the current ringing phenomenon, having an important influence on the short circuit behaviour of the ...

A new method for fast short circuit protection of IGBTs
IECON 2014 - 40th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2014This paper presents a new, simple and low cost method for fast short circuit protection of IGBT modules. The principle of the method is to measure the voltage across the inductance between the power-emitter and the auxiliary-emitter. Moreover, by modulating the gate-signal, the new method reduces the gate emitter voltage V ge in order to limit the ...

Protecting IGBTs Against Short Circuit
EPE Journal, 1991SummaryInsulated Gate Bipolar Transistor(IGBTs)with the most rugged intrinsic short circuit performance generally have high saturation voltage and high operating losses, and vice versa. This application note demonstrates that IGBTs with even modest intrinsic short-circuit capability can be fully protected against short circuit, allowing the most ...

Short Circuit Protection of Energy-Efficient Motors
IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, 1997Many years ago, the National Electrical Code established a maximum setting for this instantaneous trip breaker of seven times motor full load amperes (FLA), the theory being that that value was just above the typical 6X locked rotor current. In a 1986 IEEE IAS paper Scheda noted that the two most commonly encountered problems in applying high ...

Short-circuit protection in Off-Grid system
2014 14th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, 2014Renewable sources of electric energy belong to key areas in research and development in recent years. This course leads to the design and development of autonomous power units, which are subject to specific requirements, so-called Off-Grid systems, designed as power supply for energy self-sufficient houses.

Current sensing in IGBTs for short-circuit protection
Proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Power Semiconductor Devices and Ics, 2002Short circuit protection can be provided for IGBTs by using a current-sensing scheme. The performance and accuracy of integrated current sensors on IGBTs can be affected by the layout of the sense device. Data is presented on current-sense IGBTs and an improved layout is proposed to increase the accuracy of the sensor.

Adaptive protection of short circuits in transmission lines
2009 Chinese Control and Decision Conference, 2009This paper proposes an adaptive protection scheme which has been developed through the analysis of short circuits in transmission lines. The method assumes a different protection pattern depending upon the distance between the fault position and the location of any protection devices.

Integrated Equipment Short-Circuit Protection
IEEE Transactions on Industry and General Applications, 1971Electrical distribution equipment is usually an integrated assembly containing various components, each with short-circuit ratings obtained under individual conditions but perhaps not valid in the actual application. It is difficult to obtain and properly evaluate all the ratings to ensure that the equipment is adequate for the system available fault ...

D-C machine flashover and bus short-circuit protection
Electrical Engineering, 1941The transient induced voltage across the interpole and compensating windings of d-c motors or generators on short circuit or flashover provide a quick and convenient means of actuating circuit breaker or other protective devices. Such means have made possible quicker tripping times than are obtained with the conventional series overload or reverse ...
