DC Power Supply Protection Against Load Short Circuits

Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics, 2021
The protection of DC power circuits against short circuits in the load is considered and a possibility of preventing emergencies is demonstrated during operation of pulse power supplies feeding the AC electric arc, which is a complex load for output stages of an inverter.

Short Circuit Protection of Energy-Efficient Motors

IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, 1997
Many years ago, the National Electrical Code established a maximum setting for this instantaneous trip breaker of seven times motor full load amperes (FLA), the theory being that that value was just above the typical 6X locked rotor current. In a 1986 IEEE IAS paper Scheda noted that the two most commonly encountered problems in applying high ...

Short-circuit protection in Off-Grid system

2014 14th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, 2014
Renewable sources of electric energy belong to key areas in research and development in recent years. This course leads to the design and development of autonomous power units, which are subject to specific requirements, so-called Off-Grid systems, designed as power supply for energy self-sufficient houses.

Intelligent System Current Protection from Short Circuits

2019 International Conference on Industrial Engineering, Applications and Manufacturing (ICIEAM), 2019
Currently, with the introduction of electrical smart grids, one of the main problems is to increase authenticity of the inclusion of relay protection devices during emergency modes. This is due to the fact that a short circuit current, and therefore, a setpoint, is affected by large number of external factors, such as humidity of the ground and the ...

Resonant converter with inherent short-circuit protection

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs, 2005
Using a systematic procedure for classifying resonant converters, we have synthesized a zero-voltage switching resonant structure with inherent short-circuit protection. We analyze the operating modes of the disclosed converter and derive the control characteristic curve. Experimental verification is presented in a 100-W prototype.

Fundamentals of short-circuit protection for transformers

2010 63rd Annual Conference for Protective Relay Engineers, 2010
This paper reviews principles of protection against internal short circuits in transformers of various constructions. Transformer fundamentals are reviewed as pertaining to protection. In particular, the electromagnetic circuit of a transformer is reviewed that links the terminal currents, winding currents, fluxes, and ampere-turns (ATs) in a set of ...

Short circuit analysis and protection of power module IGBTs

Twentieth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2005. APEC 2005., 2005
In this paper, the failure modes of power module IGBTs have been experimentally studied by focusing on the short-circuit behaviour of the devices, with reference to the hard switching fault (HSF) and fault under load (FUL) types of fault. In particular, the current ringing phenomenon, having an important influence on the short circuit behaviour of the ...

Protecting IGBTs Against Short Circuit

EPE Journal, 1991
SummaryInsulated Gate Bipolar Transistor(IGBTs)with the most rugged intrinsic short circuit performance generally have high saturation voltage and high operating losses, and vice versa. This application note demonstrates that IGBTs with even modest intrinsic short-circuit capability can be fully protected against short circuit, allowing the most ...
