Integrated Equipment Short-Circuit Protection
IEEE Transactions on Industry and General Applications, 1971Electrical distribution equipment is usually an integrated assembly containing various components, each with short-circuit ratings obtained under individual conditions but perhaps not valid in the actual application. It is difficult to obtain and properly evaluate all the ratings to ensure that the equipment is adequate for the system available fault ...

D-C machine flashover and bus short-circuit protection
Electrical Engineering, 1941The transient induced voltage across the interpole and compensating windings of d-c motors or generators on short circuit or flashover provide a quick and convenient means of actuating circuit breaker or other protective devices. Such means have made possible quicker tripping times than are obtained with the conventional series overload or reverse ...

Current sensing in IGBTs for short-circuit protection
Proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Power Semiconductor Devices and Ics, 2002Short circuit protection can be provided for IGBTs by using a current-sensing scheme. The performance and accuracy of integrated current sensors on IGBTs can be affected by the layout of the sense device. Data is presented on current-sense IGBTs and an improved layout is proposed to increase the accuracy of the sensor.

Short circuit proof IGBTs simplify overcurrent protection
Conference Record of the 1991 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2002The author describes work being performed to manufacture, test, and characterize short-circuit proof IGBTs (insulated-gate bipolar transistors). These rugged devices can survive short circuit loads, which enable the power circuit to interrupt this current without blowing fuses.

Adaptive protection of short circuits in transmission lines
2009 Chinese Control and Decision Conference, 2009This paper proposes an adaptive protection scheme which has been developed through the analysis of short circuits in transmission lines. The method assumes a different protection pattern depending upon the distance between the fault position and the location of any protection devices.

New short-circuit protection for voltage regulator
Proceedings of First International Caracas Conference on Devices, Circuits and Systems, 2002This paper presents a new means to protect a simple voltage regulator using a FET instead of the conventional bipolar transistor. The scheme reduces the circuit's time response as well as its output current variations with temperature, while at the same time simplifies the overall circuit. Several laboratory tests, in conjunction with SPICE simulations

Short-circuit protection issues in DC ship grids
2013 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium (ESTS), 2013DC grids offer highly efficient distribution of electric energy, eliminating components and optimizing the use of cables. Efficient generation, however, is still based on AC generators. Power-electronic devices link generators and grid and customize energy flow to the loads. Efficient distribution with low losses demands high voltage, e.g. in the range
