A Refractive Index Sensor Based on the Resonant Coupling to Cladding Modes in a Fiber Loop

open access: yesSensors, 2013
We report an easy-to-build, compact, and low-cost optical fiber refractive index sensor. It consists of a single fiber loop whose transmission spectra exhibit a series of notches produced by the resonant coupling between the fundamental mode and the ...

Strong Interrelation between the Short-Term Variability in the Ionosphere, Upper Mesosphere, and Winter Polar Stratosphere

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
We perform a joint analysis of short-period (up to several hours) variability in parameters of the ionosphere, the mesosphere, and the stratosphere at mid-latitude, subauroral, and high-latitude points for a long time interval.

Very Short-Term Blackout Prediction for Grid-Tied PV Systems Operating in Low Reliability Weak Electric Grids of Developing Countries

open access: yesComplexity, 2022
Sub-Saharan emerging countries experience electrical shortages resulting in power rationing, which ends up hampering economic activities. This paper proposes an approach for very short-term blackout forecast in grid-tied PV systems operating in low ...

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Dragon Intermittency at the Transition to Synchronization in Coupled Rulkov Neurons

open access: yesMathematics
We investigate the synchronization dynamics of two non-identical, mutually coupled Rulkov neurons, emphasizing the effects of coupling strength and parameter mismatch on the system’s behavior. At low coupling strengths, the system exhibits multistability,

A note on primes in short intervals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper is concerned with the number of primes in short intervals. We prove that for every $\theta>1/2$ the intervals $[x, x+x^{\theta}]$ contain the expected number of primes for $x\rightarrow \infty$, with the assumption of an heuristic hypothesis ...

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Invisible but not inaccessible—Revealing transient oligomers formed by intrinsically disordered proteins with solution NMR and complementary methods

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Transient oligomers formed by intrinsically disordered proteins may be ‘invisible’ to direct detection yet remain accessible to solution NMR through equilibrium‐exchange measurements and pressure‐jump experiments. Complementary methods report on mass, stoichiometry, selected distance distributions, morphology, and internal packing.

Particle acceleration by wave scattering off dielectric spheres at whispering-gallery-mode resonance

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams, 2007
The large electromagnetic fields, created in wave scattering near a perfect dielectric sphere at the condition of whispering-gallery-mode resonances, are investigated as driving units for high energy charged particle accelerators.

Optimal Evolutionary Dispatch for Integrated Community Energy Systems Considering Uncertainties of Renewable Energy Sources and Internal Loads

open access: yesEnergies, 2021
For the future development of integrated energy systems with high penetration of renewable energy, an integrated community energy systems (ICES) dispatch model is proposed including various renewable energy sources and energy conversion units.
