CONVERSION OF SHORT FATIGUE CRACKS INTO A LONG CRACK

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1992
AbstractThis paper presents a method for the statistical processing of results of initiation and propagation of short fatigue cracks. The distribution of the lengths of these cracks followed a Weibull distribution function. The value of the size parameter of this distribution grows with the number of cycles, but the value of the shape parameter ...

Crack tip stress intensity factor of the double slip plane crack model: Short cracks and short short-cracks

International Journal of Fracture, 1984
The crack tip stress intensity factorK1 for a short crack is determined using the double slip plane (DSP) crack model. It is shown thatK1 for a stationary crack is larger than the nominal stress intensity factorK. This result differs from the case of the stationary DSP long crack for whichK1 =K. The physical cause whyK1 >K is the fall off with distance

Ultrasonic sizing of short surface cracks

Ultrasonics, 2007
This paper presents a method for ultrasonic sizing of surface cracks based on time domain and frequency domain Rayleigh wave near-field analysis. The procedure allows for the entire range of ratio of crack depth to Rayleigh wavelength a/lambda to be covered with one single measurement. In the time domain the time-of-flight method was extended to cracks

Cyclic analysis of propagating short cracks at notches and short-crack growth behaviour

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1989
Elastic-plastic and large-strain finite element analyses of propagating short cracks at notches under cyclic loading and the corresponding fatigue crack growths of short cracks have been studied. The specimens used in both numerical analyses and crack growth testing were semicircular notched and V-shaped notched flat panels with a through-thickness ...

Fracture mechanics of bone with short cracks

Journal of Biomechanics, 1990
Tensile fracture experiments were performed upon specimens of wet mature bovine Haversian bone, with short, controlled notches. Stress concentration factors were found to be significantly less than values predicted using a maximum stress criterion in the theory of elasticity.

A MODEL FOR SHORT FATIGUE CRACK PROPAGATION WITH AN INTERPRETATION OF THE SHORT‐LONG CRACK TRANSITION

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1987
AbstractThe behaviour of short cracks approaching growth barriers (e.g. grain boundaries) is considered. The crack model of Bilby, Cottrell and Swinden is applied to simulate the blocking of the plastic zone at the grain boundary and to obtain the stress concentration ahead of the crack as it approaches the barrier.

The influence of crack size on the fracture behaviour of short cracks

International Journal of Fracture, 1990
Crack size effects are investigated by applying local fracture criteria at a specific distance ahead of a crack tip, related to the material’s microstructure. For sufficiently long cracks, the criteria are applied at points within the singularity-dominated region and then failure corresponds to the attainment of a critical intensity of the singularity ...

THE SHORT CRACK PROBLEM

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, 1982
— The problem associated with short crack growth, defined as situations in which the intensity of the crack tip field is underestimated by linear elastic fracture mechanics analyses, is briefly reviewed. Two cases are identified, cracks growing in plastically strained materials, such as occurs in high strain fatigue studies and at notch roots ...

Crack growth and closure behavior of short fatigue cracks

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1994
Abstract Crack growth and closure behavior of short cracks are investigated for various stress ratios, using in-plane bending specimens of 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. Artificially prepared two-dimensional, short through-thickness cracks are used.

Crack closure and the growth of short and long fatigue cracks

Scripta Metallurgica, 1984
A general framework for the analysis of both short and long cracks is presented which relies importantly on crack closure. The analysis indicates that the growth of very short cracks is length independent. Since closure decreases with an increase in mean stress level it should become more difficult to arrest cracks as the mean stress level increases ...
