Bioinspired Adaptive Surfaces for Intelligent Liquid Manipulation: Progressing From Passive and Active to Hybrid Strategies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review examines passive, active, and hybrid liquid manipulation strategies, highlighting hybrid approaches as an emerging route to reconcile energy efficiency with adaptive control. By actively reconstructing passive surfaces to store programmable interfacial energy, hybrid systems enable flexible yet low‐power liquid transport, with perspectives ...

Noise of a superconducting magnetic flux sensor based on a proximity Josephson junction

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
We demonstrate simultaneous measurements of DC transport properties and flux noise of a hybrid superconducting magnetometer based on the proximity effect (superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor, SQUIPT).

Defect‐Templated Phase Engineering in Atomically Thin Metals

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene defects are transformed from passive imperfections into programmable templates for phase‐selective growth of atomically thin silver. Plasma‐generated boundary defects favor Ag(1), whereas sp3‐rich zero‐layer graphene promotes Ag(2). This defect‐directed intercalation links local graphene chemistry to crystalline phase, electronic structure ...

Shot-Noise Reduction for Lattice Hamiltonians

open access: yesPRX Quantum
Efficiently estimating energy expectation values of quantum lattice systems on quantum computers is a crucial subroutine for various quantum algorithms, which can lead to significant overhead due to the high measurement shot numbers required. We introduce a measurement strategy tailored to quantum lattice systems and (noisy) energy eigenstates.

Ion Concentration and Voltage Imaging With Fluorescent Nanodiamonds

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We demonstrate reversible switching between the fluorescent NV0 and the dark NV+ state, in sub‐30 nm FNDs via surface oxidation and hydrogenation, respectively. In an electrochemical cell, we show that the fluorescence from hydrogenated particles enables all‐optical imaging of voltages and ion concentrations at the micrometer scale.

Directing Near‐Perfect (001) Orientation in Wafer‐Scale BiOI Thin Films via Halide‐Mediated van der Waals Stacking

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Our work introduces a new framework that fundamentally changes how orientation in bismuth oxyhalide systems is approached. Comprehensive experiments, backed by theoretical models, reveal the pivotal role of halide anions to modify the van der Waals stacking energies required to direct orientation. Our method enables the fabrication of near perfect (001)

Feasibility Simulations of Dual-Layer Flat Panel Detectors for Bone Mineral Density Estimation

open access: yesIEEE Access
Bone mineral density (BMD) measurement plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis. The most widely used clinical method is dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), where image scanning using fan-beam x-rays requires complex ...
