The din of gunfire: Rethinking the role of sound in World War II newsreels

open access: yesNECSUS, 2014
French film historian Laurent Véray has famously called World War I ‘the first media war of the twentieth century’. Newsreels, which first appeared in 1910, brought the war to movie theaters across Europe and the U.S., screening combat for those on the ...

Superhydrophobic drag reduction in laminar flows: a critical review

open access: yes, 2016
A gas in between micro- or nanostructures on a submerged superhydrophobic (SHPo) surface allows the liquid on the structures to flow with an effective slip.

Toward Long‐Lasting Slippery Surfaces for Condensation and Icephobicity: From Lubricant‐Infused to Liquid‐Like Surfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 12, Issue 24, December 22, 2025.
Schematic of two representative slippery surface: Lubricant‐infused surface (LIS) and liquid‐like surface (LLS) and its application in condensation and icephobic surface ABSTRACT Slippery surfaces that minimize contact line pinning and enable high droplet mobility have emerged as promising solutions for enhancing condensation and anti‐icing performance.

Optimizing Extended Tight‐Binding Methods for Metal‐Surface Interactions

open access: yesChemPhysChem, Volume 26, Issue 23, November 28, 2025.
This work demonstrates how systematic parameter optimization within GFN1‐xTB (Geometry, Frequency, Noncovalent, eXtended Tight‐Binding) framework improves the accuracy of water–metal interaction energies. Using Sobol sensitivity analysis, key parameters are identified and optimized for copper, silver, gold, palladium, and platinum surfaces.

Energy‐Efficient and Wide‐Angle Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer for Smart Energy System

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
This paper presents an energy‐efficient and wide‐angle simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system designed for smart energy systems, such as the Internet of Things (IoTs). The system transmits information by connecting numerous IoT devices to a network, while a microwave‐based power grid eliminates the need for manual battery ...

Super‐liquid‐repellent thin film materials for low temperature latent heat thermal energy storage: A comprehensive review of materials for dip‐coating

open access: yesEnergy Storage, Volume 6, Issue 4, June 2024.
Abstract When discharging latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems, performance is influenced by the formation and adherence of a solid layer of phase change material (PCM) on heat eXchange (HX) surfaces. Super‐liquid‐repellent thin films (STFs) may be able to reduce solidifying PCM adhesion on HX surfaces during discharging, delay PCM ...

Superbiphilic Laser‐Microengineered Surfaces with A Self‐Assembled Monolayer Coating for Exceptional Boiling Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 34, Issue 10, March 4, 2024.
In this study, laser‐functionalized copper surfaces with spatially tailored wettability are developed by combining two‐step laser texturing with a self‐assembled monolayer coating as an innovative thermal management solution. These “biphilic” surfaces exhibit intentionally varied local superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity and exceptional pool ...
