Genomic and phylogenetic characterization of Shuni virus [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Virology, 2014
Shuni virus (SHUV), a member of the genus Orthobunyavirus, has in a recent study been associated with neurological disease in horses in South Africa. After its first isolation in 1966 from an asymptomatic bovine, very little attention was given to the genetic characterisation of SHUV.

Prioritisation of zoonotic diseases for coordinated surveillance systems under the One Health approach for cross‐border pathogens that threaten the Union

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 21, Issue 3, March 2023., 2023
Abstract In the context of the initiative ‘CP‐g‐22‐04.01 Direct grants to Member States’ authorities', EFSA was requested to develop and conduct a prioritisation of zoonotic diseases, in collaboration with Member States, to identify priorities for the establishment of a coordinated surveillance system under the One Health approach.

Differentiation of Antibodies against Selected Simbu Serogroup Viruses by a Glycoprotein Gc-Based Triplex ELISA

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences, 2021
The Simbu serogroup of orthobunyaviruses includes several pathogens of veterinary importance, among them Schmallenberg virus (SBV), Akabane virus (AKAV) and Shuni virus (SHUV). They infect predominantly ruminants and induce severe congenital malformation.

Identification and Genetic Characterization of Viral Pathogens in Ruminant Gestation Abnormalities, Israel, 2015–2019

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Infectious agents including viruses are important abortifacients and can cause fetal abnormalities in livestock animals. Here, samples that had been collected in Israel from aborted or malformed ruminant fetuses between 2015 and 2019 were investigated ...

A sensitive nested real-time RT-PCR for the detection of Shuni virus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virological Methods, 2014
Recently Shuni virus (SHUV) has been identified in clinical cases of neurological disease in horses in South Africa. Being that it was one of the less recognized orthobunyaviruses, with limited clinical descriptions of disease dating back to the 1960s and 1970s, SHUV-specific assays were never developed.

Vector‐borne diseases

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 15, Issue 5, May 2017., 2017
Abstract After a request from the European Commission, EFSA's Panel on Animal Health and Welfare summarised the main characteristics of 36 vector‐borne diseases (VBDs) in 36 Disease Profiles. The risk of introduction in the EU through movement of livestock or pets was assessed for each of the 36 VBDs individually, using a semiquantitative Method to ...

Nucleic Acid Based Detection and Prevalence of Yellow Fever Viral RNA Among Mosquitoes in Bayelsa State, Nigeria: An Environmental Epithet of Emerging Water‐Inhabiting Insects

open access: yesMedicine Advances, Volume 3, Issue 3, Page 209-217, September 2025.
High density and RNA copies of yellow fever virus‐carrying/harbouring mosquitoes The study investigated high density and RNA copies of yellow fever virus‐carrying/harbouring mosquitoes and the distribution of YFV, an RNA virus due to the proliferation of mosquito species in the flood‐affected area of Bayelsa State.

First genomic detection of Peaton virus in a calf with hydranencephaly in Israel

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, 2019
Simbu serogroup are arbo‐ viruses which are mainly transmitted by Culicoides. Two members of the Simbu serogroup, Akabane and Shuni viruses, have been isolated from congenitally malformed ruminants in Israel.
