Experimental studies of performance and emissions in a 2/4-stroke engine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityDirect Injection (DI) gasoline engines are staging a come-back because of its potential for improved fuel economy through principally the engine down-sizing

State-dependent Kalman filters for robust engine control [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Vehicle emissions variations impose significant challenges to the automotive industry. In these simulation studies, nonlinear estimation techniques based on state-dependent and extended Kalman filtering are developed for spark ignition engines to enhance

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Theoretical and experimental investigation of SI engine performance and exhaust emissions using ethanol-gasoline blended fuels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In this study, potato waste bioethanol was evaluated as an alternative fuel for gasoline engines. The pollutant emissions and performance of a four stroke SI engine operating on ethanol-gasoline blends has been investigated experimentally and ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Experimental investigation of alcohol blending effect on the performances of a single cylinder spark-ignition marine engine

open access: yesInternational Journal of Automotive Science and Technology, 2021
This work represents an experimental study on the performances of a single cylinder spark-ignition marine engine fueled by ethanol blends. Several studies have been carried out to investigate the use of alternative fuels in spark-ignition engines to ...

Performance of direct injected propane and gasoline in a high stroke-to-bore ratio SI engine: Pathways to diesel efficiency parity with ultra low soot

open access: yesInternational Journal of Engine Research, 2021
This work explores pathways to achieve diesel-like, high-efficiency combustion with stoichiometric 3-way catalyst compatible combustion in a single-cylinder spark ignition (SI) research engine.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Effects of Methyl Acetate as Oxygenated Fuel Blending on Performance and Emissions of SI Engine

open access: yesEnvironmental and Climate Technologies, 2018
The objective of this paper is to investigate the use of methyl acetate as oxygenated fuel blending for base gasoline in SI engine. The effects of methyl acetate on engine performance parameters (brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
