1973年~1974年のエネルギー危機を契機として,北米,英国,北欧を中心に,特定の居住環境に限定して,中枢神経,粘膜,皮膚,上気道,下気道症状を主体とする身体の不調を訴えるものが急増し, sick building syndrome (SBS)として注目を浴びるに至っている. WHOによれば新建造ビルの約30%において, SBSの発現の可能性があるとされる. SBS増加の背景には省エネルギーのための室内気換気の削減,あるいは加湿,空調システムの導入に基づく空内気汚染物質の増加があり,特に従来その毒性に注意が向けられることのなかった因子,あるいは濃度における作用が問題となっている.わが国においては未だSBSに関する十分な調査はなされていないが,今後大きな問題となってくる可能性がある.
