Familial sick sinus syndrome in two siblings

open access: yesThe Turkish Journal of Pediatrics, 1993
Two siblings with sinus node disease are presented. The patients were severely affected and required permanent pacing. A cardiac electrophysiologic study was conducted in Case 2, which revealed an atrioventricular conduction disturbance in ...

The Evolution of Sinoatrial Node Function in Man [PDF]

open access: yes, 1973
The function of the sinoatrial node is complex. In nearly all hearts, this small bit of tissue is responsible for spontaneously generating the impulse which will be distributed to the remainder of the heart, maintaining coordinated electrical and ...

The role of neutrophils in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Objectives Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses a spectrum of chronic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, with a potential bidirectional relationship with periodontitis. Neutrophils are key regulators of immune‐inflammatory responses and play a major role in both diseases.

An eye on long‐duration spaceflight: Controversies, countermeasures and challenges

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Space flight‐associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS) is a consequence of long‐duration space flight and is detected in two‐thirds of astronauts. In‐flight, this can cause a change in the refraction of the eyes, requiring graded hypermetropic ‘superfocus adjustable’ glasses, optic nerve head oedema and choroidal folds.

Effects of the angle of head‐down tilt on dynamic cerebral autoregulation during combined exposure to cephalad fluid shift and mild hypercapnia

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Astronauts experience combined exposure to a cephalad fluid shift and mild hypercapnia during space missions, potentially contributing to health problems. Such combined exposure may weaken dynamic cerebral autoregulation. The magnitude of cephalad fluid shift varies between individuals, and dynamic cerebral autoregulation may be affected more ...

Carotid artery dissection linked to intermittent apnoeic swimming: A case–control study

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection is a rare and potentially devastating cause of cerebral ischaemia, initiated by an intimal tear or rupture of the vasa vasorum, that can lead to an intraluminal thrombus, vascular stenosis, occlusion, or dissecting aneurysm formation.

The Hidden Rhythm: A Rare Case of Isoarrhythmic Sick Sinus Syndrome Defying Chronotropic Expectations

open access: yesInternational Journal of Medical Students
Background: Isoarrhythmic sick sinus syndrome (SSS) is a rare and often under-recognized variant of sinus node dysfunction, where the sinus and junctional rates are nearly identical, masquerading as a normal rhythm.

Clinical aspects of cardiac pacing for bradyarrhythmias [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Since 1977, technological advances have made it possible, to incorporate a microprocessor in an implantable pacemaker. In 1980, the first devices with a microprocessor became available for patient use.
