Facing the Future of Crime: A Framework for Police Use of Technology

open access: yesThe Political Quarterly, Volume 95, Issue 3, Page 480-488, July/September 2024.
Abstract Technological change is rapid and brings many benefits to society. However, for some technologies there will be unintended consequences that create new opportunities for crime, or new ways of committing existing offences. Understanding what these threats are and addressing them is of great importance if we are to benefit responsibly from ...

Molecular regulation of virulence in Legionella pneumophila

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 121, Issue 2, Page 167-195, February 2024.
Enabled by the Type IV Dot/Icm secretion system, the bacterial parasite Legionella pneumophila is evolutionarily adapted to dwell intracellularly in a multitude of eukaryotic hosts including humans. This review is focused on the regulatory mechanisms that govern the switch from bacterial replicative forms to environmentally resilient forms, in response

The LysR‐type transcriptional regulator LelA co‐regulates various effectors in different Legionella species

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 121, Issue 2, Page 243-259, February 2024.
We describe a novel LysR‐type transcriptional regulator (LelA) which activates the expression of three Legionella pneumophila effector‐encoding genes (LegL6, LegL7 and LegU1), and is regulated by the RpoS sigma factor. Our data provides insights into the expression, evolution and distribution of this regulator and its target genes.
