Counting cell number in situ by quantification of dimethyl sulphide in culture headspace. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A novel, non-invasive technique is reported for determining the numbers of cells in a culture by quantifying dimethyl sulphide (DMS) in the culture headspace as produced by the cellular enzymatic reduction of dissolved dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO ...

Increase of methanol in exhaled breath quantified by SIFT-MS following aspartame ingestion [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Breath Research, 2015
Aspartame, methyl-L-α-aspartyl-L-phenylalaninate, is used worldwide as a sweetener in foods and drinks and is considered to be safe at an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 40 mg per kg of body weight. This compound is completely hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract to aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol, each being toxic at high levels.

Production of MgO/TiC Composites From MgO‐C Recyclates Using Spark Plasma Sintering

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Using the spark plasma sintering technique, MgO/TiC composites are manufactured from recycled MgO‐C refractories stemming from the steel production that were mixed with titanium powder. This article shows, how the size of the Ti grains and their distribution in the powder mixture affect the local carbon concentration in TiC.

Sustainable Catalyst‐Free PLG Networks: Recyclability, Biodegradability, and Functional Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A catalyst‐additive free covalent adaptable network is developed from star‐shaped poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide) cross‐linked with pyromellitic dianhydride, enabling internal carboxylic acid‐driven transesterification. The resulting biodegradable network exhibits mechanical robustness (Young's modulus ≈1.6 GPa), complete recyclability, rapid biodegradation

Engineering Strategies for Stable and Long‐Life Alkaline Zinc‐Based Flow Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Alkaline zinc‐based flow batteries face persistent challenges from unstable zinc deposition, including dendrite growth, passivation, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution, which severely limit cycling stability. Current research addresses these issues through coordinated electrode structuring, electrolyte regulation, and membrane design to control zinc ...
