Gab signals for railway signaling

Journal of the A.I.E.E., 1927
There is described in this paper a system of continuous signals operating within the cab of a railway locomotive. This system was developed in an effort to provide more reliable and safer signals than the common semaphore or light signals. The particular type of system is called the three-speed, continuous-control signal system.

To signal or not to signal: That should not be the question

Accident Analysis & Prevention, 2013
The purpose of the present research was to examine rates of turn signal use, a positive and potentially valuable means by which drivers can communicate. A second purpose was to explore factors that might impact these rates, including the modeling influence of other drivers.

Signaling games and music as a credible signal

Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2021
Abstract The argument by Mehr et al. that music emerged and evolved culturally as a credible signal is convincing, but it lacks one essential ingredient: a model of signaling behavior that supports the main hypothesis theoretically and empirically.

The Representation of Signals

IRE Transactions on Circuit Theory, 1959
As the communication art becomes more sophisticated, engineers are being called on to deal more and more with complicated signals. This trend is typified by the use of noise-like signals to combat multipath (as in the RAKE), various suggestions for improving the range and velocity resolution of radars, and the desire to evolve ways of reducing the ...

Signals and Signal Transduction

2018
This chapter begins by providing a brief overview of the types of external cues that direct plant growth. In general, an environmental input that initiates one or more plant responses is referred to as a signal, and the physical component that biochemically responds to that signal is designated a receptor.

Signal abstractions in signal processing software

IEEE Transactions on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1989
The authors propose and formally define the concept of multilevel signal abstractions as an organizational principle for real-world signal processing software that requires both algorithmic and heuristic techniques. As an example, they have implemented a set of signal abstractions, the extended spectrum, for harmonic spectra.

Hydraulic signals in long-distance signaling

Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2013
Higher plants are sessile organisms that continuously adapt their metabolism and development in response to a changing environment. Control of water uptake and the maintenance of water status are key for the survival and optimal growth of plants. Environmental factors such as radiation, air temperature, rainfall, and humidity have a high impact on ...

Controlling Signals, Signal Propagation and Signal Transduction

2014
When thousands and billions of cells have to fulfil the task to collectively construct an organism with its complex tissues and organs a manifold of mutual agreements are necessary. Controlling cells, for example organizing centres in early embryos, must emit coordinating signals. In order to respond to the signals cells must have the correct equipment

An in-circuit signal analyzer for mixed signal digital signal processor

[Proceedings] ICASSP 91: 1991 International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1991
The architecture and functionality of a DSP hardware developmental tool called the in-circuit signal analyzer (ICSA) are discussed. This instrument is intended for embedded single chip DSP applications. ICSA is the first tool that allows for target DSP software debug integrated with signal domain analysis.

Local Ca2+ Signals in Cellular Signalling

Current Molecular Medicine, 2004
Local Ca2+ rises and propagated Ca2+ signals represent different patterns that are differentially decoded for fine tuning cellular signalling. This Ca2+ concentration plasticity is absolutely required to allow adaptation to different needs of the cells ranging from contraction or increased learning to proliferation and cell death.
